April 21, 2014 Seventh-Inning Comeback vs. Springfield Sends Softball to School Record 25th Win Worcester, MA --- Kristin Gallagher went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and drove in the tying run as WPI scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic 4-3 walk-off win over NEWMAC foe Springfield College on Monday. The victory gave the Crimson and Gray a single-season school record 25 wins and helped them improve to 12-0 lifetime at WPI’s Rooftop Field, which is new this year. April 20, 2014 | Women's Rowing Posts Trio of Top Three Finishes as Part of Bernie Brown Cup Worcester, MA --- WPI women’s rowing continued its string of competing against strong crews this season when they welcomed two other top 10 teams to Lake Quinsigamond on Easter Sunday morning. The ninth-ranked varsity eight was third behind third-ranked William Smith and eighth-ranked Tufts, who captured the Bernie Brown Cup after the Engineers had held it for three straight years The second varsity was second and the third varsity eight won for the second time this weekend and third time in four races this spring. >>
April 19, 2014 | Dynamic Doolin Gives Softball Sweep Against NEWMAC Foe Babson Worcester, MA --- Clare Doolin snagged both wins as the WPI softball team swept a NEWMAC doubleheader against Babson, 10-4 and 1-0, early Saturday at the Crimson and Gray’s new Rooftop Field where WPI is still undefeated (11-0). Doolin entered the first game in the third inning, down 3-0, and she scattered two hits and one earned run over the final five frames as the Engineers’ bats got hot on Senior Day. Doolin then returned for the nightcap, going the distance in a two-hit shutout. The sophomore faced just 39 batters, or three over the minimum during her combined 12 innings of work. >>
April 19, 2014 | Men's Track and Field Captures Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet Title at Fitchburg Fitchburg, MA --- The trio of Matt Butler, Jameel Galloway and John deRivera were victorious in field events while the duo of Jacob Mercier and Andrew Zayac along with a pair of relay squads posted triumphs in running events as the WPI Men’s Track and Field won Fitchburg State’s Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet on Saturday. The Crimson and Gray racked up 222 points to out-distance second place Bridgewater State. The team championship marked the third in four outings this spring for WPI. >>
April 19, 2014 | Women's Rowing Sees 3V Win Again and V8 Place Second at NEWMAC Championships Worcester, MA --- For the second consecutive year WPI’s third varsity eight won its race at the NEWMAC Championships, while the varsity eight and the program as a whole finished second at Saturday’s regatta hosted by on Lake Quinsigamond. The varsity eight crossed the line in 6:56.81, finishing behind the nation’s second-ranked boat from Wellesley while third varsity eight struck gold for a second straight spring (7:40.39). April 19, 2014 | Ouellette's and Feraco's Blasts Can’t Thwart Springfield Sweep of Baseball Worcester, MA --- Trailing WPI baseball in the NEWMAC standings coming into the weekend, Springfield completed a sweep of a three-game weekend series against the Engineers on Saturday at Worcester State, winning both games of a doubleheader, 5-3 and 4-2, led by hot-hitting senior catcher Sean Smith. The Engineers got solid starting pitching from Taylor Landry in game one and Mike Vaitkunas in the night cap while DJ Ouellette smashed a homer in the homer and Will Feraco belted a round tripper in game two. >>
April 19, 2014 | Women’s Track and Field Impressive Second at FSU's Eric Loeschner Memorial Fitchburg, MA --- WPI Women’s Track and Field saw five individuals and a relay team take home victories Saturday at the Eric Loeschner Memorial Meet hosted by Fitchburg State. The Engineers amassed 140 points to place second just 18 points away from meet champion and NEWMAC rival Wheaton. Laura Pumphrey captured the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 15.77 while her height of 5.2.25 in the high jump Other winners for the Crimson and Gray included Anne Harris, Julie Tevenan, Julie Eagle, Andrea Caprio and the 4x400 relay team. >>
April 19, 2014 | Men's Rowing Sees Varsity Eight Best Trinity for First Time in Noble Era Worcester, MA --- The WPI men’s rowing program hosted one of its largest regular season regattas on Saturday morning, welcoming five other schools to Lake Quinsigamond. The varsity eight continued their recent strong run, finishing second. including defeating Trinity for the first time under the tutelage of 15 year head coach Larry Noble. The varsity eight rode a tailwind to a sizzling time of 5:55.14, 3.36 seconds behind winner Trinity but 2.49 ahead of the Bantams while both the second and third varsity eights finished third. >>
April 18, 2014 | Pitching Takes Center Stage as Softball Splits at MIT Cambridge, MA --- WPI pitching did now allow an earned run on the day but had to settle for a road split on Friday with conference rival MIT. Worcester’s Engineers took game one 5-2 before MIT scored two in the bottom of the seventh to take the night cap 2-1. In the first game, WPI scored three of its five runs in the first inning highlighted by a Kristin Gallagher RBI triple and a Lauren DiFelice run-producing double. The other two were scored in the top of the fourth via an Amanda Pierce run-scoring double and a Hope Shevchuk RBI single giving the WPI Engineers a 5-0 edge over the MIT Engineers. >>
April 18, 2014 | Wild Ninth Does in Baseball After Comeback at Springfield Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College baseball team walked off with a 3-2 win on a wild pitch to take a critical NEWMAC game over WPI on Berry-Allen Field Friday afternoon. The Engineers tied it up late with a run in the ninth. Sean Greene reached on a throwing error to start the inning. After advancing to third on a grounder to shortstop, he scored on a single by Zach Blanchard to left field to make it a 2-2 game. Springfield improves to 14-11 (8-7 NEWMAC) with the win while WPI drops to 16-12 (9-6 NEWMAC) with the loss. >>
April 17, 2014 | Pitching, Timely Hitting Key Baseball's 5-2 Victory Against MIT Cambridge, MA --- WPI took advantage of four MIT errors to score three unearned runs that proved to be the difference in a 5-2 NEWMACvbaseball win. Freshman Mike Duclos allowed two runs on five hits over six innings to pick up the win for WPI while junior K.J. Parent surrendered six hits and four runs, just one of which was earned, over six innings for MIT. There was no scoring over the first three innings as Duclos and Parent combined to allow just four hits in that span. WPI (16-11, 9-5 NEMWAC) scored first in the fourth when sophomore Vinny D’Ambrosio led off with a double down the line in left. >>
