July 22, 2014 Daily Herd Feature: Coworker Gets New Look to Support Cancer Survivor When Ann McCarron’s hair started to fall out at work, predictably on the 14th day after her first chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer, her colleague, Rick Beaulac, didn’t hesitate to support her. That very day he shaved his head in a wordless and profound act of solidarity. Despite going through grueling treatments of chemo—as well as a mastectomy—McCarron says losing her hair was especially tough. June 24, 2014 | Eagle and DeChristofaro Draw Repeat Track and Field Academic All-American Selections Worcester, MA --- The WPI Track and Field duo of Julie Eagle and Wesley DeChristofaro have been named Capital One Division III Track and Field/Cross Country Academic All-Americans for a second straight year. Eagle, a graduate student, earned first team women’s accolades in voting conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA), while DeChristofaro, a senior, garnered third team men’s honors. >>
June 20, 2014 | Wrestling Highlight Reel in Competition for Best of Brand On June 23, voting opens in the “Highlight Reel” category for the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)’s Best of Brand contest—and WPI’s wrestling program is seeded third in the field of 14 finalists. The contest, sponsored by the NWCA in collaboration with Elite Level Sports Marketing, recognizes wrestling programs for “their investment in marketing with a goal of continuing to inspire coaches to engage in branding initiatives,” according to the NWCA press release announcing the finalists. It’s the second time WPI wrestling has been so honored; last year, the WPI highlight reel reached the contest’s final round, ultimately bowing out to Maryland. >>
June 19, 2014 | Men's Basketball Selected to Play in 2014 Hoopsville National Invitational Classic Owings Mills, MD --- WPI men’s basketball will participate in the third annual Hoopsville National Invitational Classic hosted by Stevenson University at Owings Mills Gymnasium November 21-23, 2014. The classic, presented by Buffalo Wild Wings, is the biggest, on campus tournament in NCAA Division I, II or III. The 2014 Classic will feature 10 teams from nine different states and the District of Columbia, six of which were ranked at No. 13 or higher in the D3hoops.com Top 25 a year ago and five who participated in the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship. >>
June 17, 2014 | WPI Captures Worcester Cup; Reveals Major Award Winners Worcester, MA --- The WPI athletic department recently honored its 20 varsity teams with over 600 student-athletes and teams during its annual awards banquet. Twelve major awards were presented, highlighting some of the best varsity student-athletes at WPI, who excel both in their respective sports and in the classroom. The top honorees included seniors Megan Forti who won the Varsity Club Award and Tim Grupp who took home the Melvin G. Massucco Award. >>
June 15, 2014 | TELEGRAM FEATURE: Softball Coach Whitney Goldstein Recalls 'Pops' — Don Zimmer Whitney Goldstein had to throw a baseball off a mound a week ago Saturday, and that felt a little strange to Goldstein. The WPI softball coach was used to underhanding one from a circle in high school before becoming an All-America third baseman at UMass, but she wound up, let it go and paid a perfect tribute to her late grandfather by firing a strike. Goldstein, the granddaughter of former Red Sox manager Don Zimmer, had the privilege of delivering the ceremonial first pitch when the Tampa Bay Rays honored Zimmer before last Saturday's game against the Mariners at Tropicana Field. >>

June 11, 2014 | Daily Herd Feature: WPI Rowing Programs London Bound WPI’s varsity rowers, both men and women, are headed across the pond to a new body of water: the River Thames. They plan to take part in regattas both in Reading and in Henley-on-Thames. For the American college students, the experience offers the opportunity to race against the elite of the rowing world. Established in 1839, the Henley Royal Regatta, for men, acquired royal patronage in 1851; the competition is world-class. The 25-year-old Henley Women’s Regatta, held two weeks earlier, was founded to create a comparable regatta for oarswomen on the Henley reach. >>

June 4, 2014 | McDonough Concludes Softball Awards Circuit with ECAC Nod Centerville, MA --- WPI senior softball player Nicole McDonough has been named a 2014 ECAC Division III New England Softball All-Star. The center fielder, who was earlier tabbed a first team All-NEWMAC honoree and a second team NFCA Division III All-New England pick, was selected to the second team by the head coaches within the ECAC Division III New England Softball membership. McDonough wrapped up a standout career that saw her register 168 hits, 24 homers, 121 runs scored and 101 RBI. >>
June 3, 2014 | Women’s Rower Steele Brings Home Second Straight Academic All-America Award Worcester, MA --- WPI women’s rower Corre Steele has been selected as a Capital One Division III Academic All-American by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). It marks the second straight third-team Academic All-American nod in the At-Large division for Steele, which includes student-athletes from bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo. The junior becomes just the 12th multiple-time Academic All-American for the Engineers and it marks the 51st time a WPI student-athlete has achieved the honor. >>
