September 22, 2014 Moran Nabs Second NEWMAC Men's Cross Country Runner of the Week Award in Three Weeks Boston, MA --- WPI men’s cross country senior Ryan Moran has been recognized as the NEWMAC Men’s Runner of the Week for the second time this season, as announced by the league office on Monday. Moran, who was also honored as the WPI Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week, continued his outstanding start to the season by placing third in a field of more than 250 competitors at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday. September 20, 2014 | Women's Soccer Draws With MIT to Open NEWMAC Slate Worcester, MA --- The WPI and MIT women’s soccer teams played to a 1-1 double overtime draw on the opening day of NEWMAC action Saturday morning at Alumni Stadium. With the result, the host Engineers move to 3-4-1 while Cambridge’s Engineers are now 4-3-2. The game remained scoreless until WPI sophomore Janine Fatal floated the ball over the keeper where it caromed off the crossbar and just past the goal line at 67:05. MIT responded in the 74th minute when freshman Olivia Struckman finished off a cross from senior Ambika Krishnamachar. >>
September 20, 2014 | Men’s Cross Country Posts Runner Up Finish at UMass Dartmouth Invitational North Dartmouth, MA --- The WPI men’s cross country team received top-10 performances from Ryan Moran and Austin Scott en route to a runner up finish at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday. Division II Franklin Pierce won with 50 points as the Crimson and Gray posted 100. Led by a trio of top-10 finishes by Tristam Winship, Daniel Stomski and Joe Kelly, the sub-varsity seven struck gold as the seven Engineer harriers finished in the top 30. >>
September 20, 2014 | Late Field Goal Dooms Football in Non-Conference Loss at Norwich Northfield, VT --- Norwich sophomore kicker Wes Medeiros made a 22-yard field goal with five seconds left in the game to clinch a 10-7 victory over WPI on Saturday afternoon on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium. Medeiros capped off an impressive 15-play, 70-yard drive that ate up 6:57 of clock and gave the Cadets their second straight victory by a 10-7 final score. Norwich started the eventual game-winning drive at its own 25-yard line after the NU defense forced WPI’s offense into a three and out, and junior Sam Chaves returned a Vinny Tavernelli punt eight yards. >>
September 20, 2014 | Women's Cross Country 10th at UMass Dartmouth Invitational North Dartmouth, MA --- Led by top-25 efforts by Julie Tevenan and Emily Newman, the WPI women’s cross country team finished 10th at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday morning. East Stroudsburg claimed the team title with 93 points while the Engineers amassed 260 points and were the highest finishing team from the NEWMAC. The Engineers look to take home their seventh straight Worcester City Meet championship on Saturday. >>
September 20, 2014 | Saturday Split - Volleyball Goes 1-1 at Tri-Match at Wheaton Norton, MA --- For the second consecutive Saturday, the WPI volleyball team dropped its opening match before rallying to take the nightcap. The Engineers dropped the first match to NEWMAC foe Wheaton 3-0 (25-8, 25-11. 25-15) before defeating Gordon by an identical 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-11) count. With the split, WPI is now 8-5 overall, already surpassing last year’s win total, and is 0-2 in NEWMAC play. The Crimson and Gray exacted some revenge in its win over Gordon, a team than defeated them 3-2 three weeks ago in a semifinal match at the Regis Tournament. >>
September 17, 2014 | Men's Soccer Edged by Nationally-Ranked Brandeis, 1-0 Worcester, MA --- Brandeis senior Michael Soboff scored in the 24th minute to lead nationally-ranked Brandeis to a 1-0 victory at WPI in a non-conference men’s soccer showdown at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night. The Judges, currently ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III coaches poll and fourth in the D3Soccer.com Top 25, improves to 6-0 while the Engineers fall to 5-1. WPI opens NEWMAC action when Clark travels down Park Ave to Alumni Stadium on Saturday for a 4:30pm matchup. >>
September 18, 2014 | Men's Basketball to Host Alumni Golf Tournament on Friday, October 10th Worcester, MA --- The 2014 WPI Men's Basketball Alumni Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, October 10th at the Green Hill Golf Course in Worcester, MA at 8am. The event will feature a Florida-style scramble and a luncheon. The luncheon will last until approximately 3pm, at which time all are invited back to WPI to watch practice ahead of its October trip to Canada. >>
September 16, 2014 | Doherty Nets a Pair as Women's Soccer Bests Framingham for Second Straight Win Worcester, MA --- Junior Emily Doherty scored a goal in each half as WPI defeated visiting Framingham State 3-1 in a non-conference women’s soccer contest on Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium. The win pushes the Engineers record to 3-4 while the Rams dip to 3-2. The Engineers kickoff a NEWMAC tripleheader on Saturday with an 11am match versus MIT. Framingham State opens its MASCAC slate against Bridgewater State, also on Saturday at 11am. >>
September 16, 2014 | Field Hockey Cornered in 3-1 Setback to Worcester State Worcester, MA --- The Worcester State field hockey team capitalized on three consecutive penalty corners to hand previously unbeaten WPI a 3-1 setback in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. With the win, the Lancers evened out at 3-3 while the Engineers slipped to 5-1 on the year. The Engineers entertain Smith at 2pm on Saturday in the middle contest of a NEWMAC tripleheader at Alumni Stadium. >>
September 16, 2014 | Volleyball Falls in NEWMAC Opener to Red Hot MIT Cambridge, MA --- Behind a match-high 21 digs from sophomore and strong setting by senior Nicole Gagnier that resulted in a .450 hitting percentage, the MIT women’s volleyball team defeated WPI, 25-10, 25-14, 25-13, in the NEWMAC opener for both squads on Tuesday night. Junior Jenny Wallace led WPI with six kills and added six digs while sophomore Shay Feeley compiled 19 assists, five digs, and an ace. Sophomore Cassandra Tomerlin paced the visitors with 12 digs. >>
