Worcester, MA --- WPI freshman midfielder Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) tallied his first collegiate goal to help the Engineers post a tightly-contested 1-0 victory over visiting Fitchburg State in non league men's soccer action on Thursday evening. Both teams are now 2-3 on the year.

Ford's goal came in the 30th minute on a perfect cross from fellow reserve Evan Demers-Peel (Norton, MA).

Fitchburg State's best chance to score came early in the second half when freshman forward Kevin Mascary (North Easton, MA) drew out WPI goalie Steve Hoffer (Lake Placid, NY), who deflected the ball right back to a Fitchburg player.  The rebound attempt sailed just to the right of the vacated net.

Hoffer was solid in net tallying five saves in the win while posting his second consecutive shutout.  He was not allowed a goal in over 250 straight minutes of action.  Sophomore goalie Matthew Carey (Stratford, MA) was stellar in net for the Falcons, making six stops on the night.

The Crimson and Gray will play their next game at home versus inter-city rival Worcester State on Monday at 4:30pm. Fitchburg will open up MASCAC play on Saturday with a 11am home match versus Framingham State .
