Field Hockey Loses Season Finale In Overtime To Mount Holyoke

Box ScoreSouth Hadley, MA --- Junior midfielder Anne Doton (Woodstock, VT) recorded the winner in the second overtime period to boost the Mount Holyoke College field hockey team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe WPI this evening at the Mount Holyoke Turf Field.
With the win, the Lyons (7-8, 4-4 NEWMAC) secured a fifth place
finish in the final NEWMAC regular season standings. They will
travel to Springfield College for a Conference Tournament
Quarterfinal Round match on Saturday. Starting time of the contest
will be announced later in the week. Mount Holyoke fell 2-0 to the
Pride when the two clubs met earlier this year.
The loss, coupled with Clark 's 2-1 victory over Smith, left WPI
tie for the eighth and final spot with MIT. MIT earned the
final berth by virture of their 2-1 victory over WPI on October
2nd. The Engineers wrapped up their 2007 slate with an overall
record of 6-11 and a league mark of 1-7.
Mount Holyoke got on the board first, as sophomore forward Katelyn Frick (Lafayette, NJ) scored off a feed from Doton 21:57 into the opening frame. Frick's fourth tally of the season was the only goal scored in the first half.
WPI evened things up just over four minutes into the second stanza, when senior forward Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) found the cage using an assist from junior defender Maggie Elbag (Rutland, MA).
Junior forward Jaimie Macari (Fiskdale, MA) recorded her team leading 13th goal of the fall in the 55th minute to put Mount Holyoke back in front by a score of 2-1.
The Engineers responded 2:29 later, as junior forward Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) scored to knot the contest up at 2-2. Maglione's seventh goal of the year sent the contest to overtime.
Following one scoreless period of extra time, Doton registered the winner 9:56 into the second overtime. It was her fourth goal of the 2007 campaign.
Mount Holyoke outshot the guests 45-35 and owned a 23-10 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Allie Walsh (Ann Arbor, MI) made 22 saves for the Lyons . Sophomore Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) and senior Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) split time between the pipes for WPI, stopping eight and five shots, respectively. Elbag added a defensive saved for the Crimson and Gray, her ninth of the year.
