Coast Guard 1, WPI 0 - NEWMAC Tournament First Round

Worcester, MA --- Freshman goalkeeper Tim Olah (Tampa, FL) made a sprawling save on a header in the final 30 seconds to help fifth-seeded Coast Guard defeat fourth-seeded host WPI 1-0 in a NEWMAC Tournament first round contest Wednesday evening. With the win, Coast Guard improves to 10-4-3 on the season and advances to the semifinals where they play host and top-seeded Wheaton at 10:30am on Saturday morning. WPI sees its season end with a record of 10-5-2.

Chris Toussaint (Shenorocke, NY) gave the Bears the only offense they would need when he headed home a free kick off the foot of Scott Senkier (Lagrangeville, NY) at 25:47. The goal was the third of the season for Toussaint.

The game was evenly matched throughout with WPI enjoying a slight 14-12 edge in shots, including the final six of the match over the last 17 minutes. Coast Guard held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks while the two teams combined for 35 fouls on the night.

Olah ended the evening with four saves while upping his record to 10-4-3. WPI senior goalie Brian Catalano (Whitinsville, MA) notched seven saves on the evening including an outstanding deflection over the crossbar with just under 20 minutes left. The loss was just the second blemish on Cantalano’s record this season in 14 decisions (10-2-2).

The match marked the second straight year the two teams have meet in the first round of the NEWMAC Tournament. Last season the Engineers went on the road and advanced on penalty kicks. The two teams also played a tight match just 12 days ago when they finished in 2-2 tie in a contest played in New London, CT.
