Coleman and Kirkland Lead WPI Men's Basketball In Historic Win Over UMass Boston

Boston, MA --- Senior forward Antoine Coleman (Everett, MA) scored 17 points to lead the WPI men's basketball team in a rout over host University of Massachusetts Boston, 89-39, tonight at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. The Beacons fall to 1-6 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 6-2.
The Beacons shot just 26.9% (14-52) from the floor for the game and committed a season-high 34 turnovers, including 20 in the first half.
UMass Boston owned a 4-3 edge with 15:36 showing in the first half, before WPI scored the next 12 points to take a 15-4 lead with 10:27 to play in the first half, behind five points from freshman guard Ben Etten (Hollis, NH). The Beacons would get no closer than nine points the rest of the half and the Engineers led by as many as 29, before settling for a 41-15 advantage at the intermission.
WPI kept the pressure on in the second stanza and took two separate leads of 55 points for his largest lead, including an 89-34 advantage with 1:29 remaining in the contest, before senior point guard A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA) netted the game's final five points on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws for UMass Boston.
Coleman was 6-10 from the floor and added seven rebounds in just 20 minutes of action for the Engineers, while junior guard Jerome Kirkland (Boston, MA) netted 15 points to go with two rebounds, two steals and two assists in 19 minutes. Sophomore forward Ben Parker (Waterbury, VT) chipped in with 10 points, four steals, a rebound and an assist in 12 minutes off the bench and senior forward Jim Marois (Worcester, MA) chipped in with nine points, five boards and a steal in 17 minutes of play as one of 13 different players to score at least a point in the game for WPI.
Senior forward Antonio Paniagua (Santiago, DR) led the Beacons with eight points, 11 rebounds two steals, a block and an assist, while senior forward Mark Doran (South Boston, MA) dropped in eight points, grabbed two rebounds and came up with a steal in 19 minutes of action. Titus finished with eight points, two rebounds and an assist.
UMass Boston will be in action again on Thursday, December 6 when it travels to Salem, MA to take on Salem State College at 7pm, while the Engineers will be on break until they travel to Rochester, NY to take on Saint John Fisher on December 29 for a 7pm. contest.
