Gilde notches a goal and an assist in 3-1 victory over Rivier

Nashua, NH --- Midfielder Ben Gilde (Manchester, NH) tallied a goal and an assist in a 3-1 WPI victory over host Rivier in non-conference men's soccer action on Thursday evening. With the win, the Engineers improve to 3-4 while Rivier slips to 2-6.
The Crimson and Gray scored first in the 25th minute when midfielder Mike Ford (Whitman, MA) deflected a perfect feed from midfielder Rens Hayes (Norton, MA) into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
WPI extended its lead in the 31st minute when Jonathan Zwirko (Holyoke, MA) knocked home a pass from Gilde. Gilde scored an insurance goal for the Boynton Hillers on an unassisted play in the 40th minute.
Rivier broke the shutout in the 42nd minute on an unassisted goal by forward Christopher Nugent (Surrey, England).
WPI goalie Steve Hoffer (Lake Placid, NY) registered seven saves on the night. Sharing time in the net for the Raiders, goalies Victor Joubert (Haverhill, MA) and John Rivera (Astoria, NY) each made five saves.
The Engineers held the advantage in shots (22-13) and corner kicks (6-1).
Both teams play away on Saturday in the afternoon. WPI continues NEWMAC play with cross-town rival Clark at 1:30pm while Rivier travels to Standish, Maine for a 3pm game versus St. Josephs.
