Smith Wins Last Home Game Over WPI in OT, 1-0

Northampton, MA --- The Smith field hockey team won its last home game of the season on Tuesday evening, defeating NEWMAC rival WPI 1-0 in overtime. With the win, Smith improved to 3-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play while WPI fell to 6-10 on the season and 1-6 in the NEWMAC.

With the game scoreless after 70 minutes of play, the Pioneers scored the game winning goal 49 seconds into the first overtime when sophomore Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) found senior Alex Janos (Hillsborough, NJ) who hammered it past WPI's keeper.

Sophomore Margaret Winter (Purchase, NY) picked up her first win of the season in goal for Smith and made eight saves.

Three goalkeepers played for WPI with Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) making three saves, Hillary Fotino (Stoneham, MA) one, and Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) eight.

The Pioneers travel to NEWMAC opponent Babson on Saturday for a 2pm contest. WPI is off until next Tuesday when they close out the NEWMAC regular season with a 4pm road contest at Mount Holyoke.
