Smith defeats WPI Volleyball 3-0

Worcester, MA --- Setters Lauren Martinez (Phoenix, AZ) and Mikal Minarich (Hobart, IN) combined for 31 assists to help pace visiting Smith to a 3-0 victory over WPI in NEWMAC conference volleyball action on Tuesday evening. The Pioneers took the match by game scores of 30-18, 30-15, 30-20.
With the win, Smith evens its record at 9-9 overall and 3-3 in conference play while WPI slips to 9-14 on the season and 1-5 in NEWMAC action.
Martinez dished out 17 assists while Minarich added 11 helpers to go along with eight kills on the night. Catherine Shafer (Red Bluff, CA) aided the Pioneer effort with nine kills and a game-best 25 digs while Bethany Weiss (Windham, NH) chipped in with four kills and a pair of block assists.
Kathryn Bomba (Chelmsford, MA) distinguished herself defensively for WPI, totaling 22 digs. Becca Holmberg (Madison, CT) (5 kills and 16 digs) and Kate Woodman (Fairfield, CT) (5 kills and 10 digs) both contributed double-doubles for the Engineers while Nikki Croteau (Wilbraham, MA) registered 14 assists.
WPI is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Elms for a tri-match with Anna Maria beginning at 1pm. The Pioneers host this weekend's Smith Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
