Springfield Wins 6th Straight In 3-0 Over WPI Women's Soccer

netted a pair of goals as visiting Springfield shutout WPI 3-0 in
NEWMAC women’s soccer action on Tuesday evening.
With the win the Pride, ranked 4th in the latest NSCAA New England
regional rankings, improve to 15-2 overall and 8-1 in conference
play. Winners of six straight and 11 of its last 12, Springfield
established a new school record for wins in a season besting the
old mark of 14 set during the 2005 campaign. WPI drops to 7-10 on
the season and 3-6 in NEWMAC action.
Kogut tallied the lone goal of the first half when she knocked
home a pass from Caitlin Sawczuk (Plainville, CT)
in the sixth minute.
The match would remain 1-0 until Jillian Pereira’s (East
Providence, RI) long free kick in the 52nd minute found the head of
Katie Gates (Amherst, MA), who buried into in the
back net for her first marker of the season. Kogut closed out the
scoring in the 85th minute when she finished a feed from
Brittney Collins (South Windsor, CT) for her
fourth goal of the year.
Springfield goalkeeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, MA)
stopped one shot en route to posting the Pride’s 13th shutout
of 2007. WPI netminder Nicole DeCampo (Stoneham,
MA) was stellar in net, recording nine saves on the night for the
Engineers. Hilary Rotatori (Auburn, MA) notched
the lone shot for the Engineers in the shutout.
The match marked the final NEWMAC regular season contest for both squads. The teams will now turn their attention to the NEWMAC Tournament which begins with first round action on Saturday afternoon. Second seeded Springfield will host seventh seeded Wellesley while eighth seeded WPI travels to top seeded and nationally ranked Wheaton.
