Westfield State Edges WPI In Non-Conference Contest, 2-1

Westfield, MA --- Midfielder Chris Spicer (Carver, MA) tallied a goal and an assist to help pace Westfield State to a 2-1 victory over visiting WPI in non-conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday evening. With the win, the Owls improve to 7-9 while the Engineers fall to 3-12.

Westfield State got the scoring started in the 16th minute when Spicer took a feed from midfielder Ben Berthiaume (Swansea, MA). WSC extended its lead when Owls midfielder Jeff Trudeau (Swansea, MA) hit home a pass from Spicer in the opening seconds of the second half.

WPI would make the score close when forward Brandon Fizel (Northport, NY) registered his second marker of the season in the 54th minute, but Westfield State would hang on for the win.

Owl’s netminder Mark Tiffany (Easthampton, MA) finished the game with five saves while his Engineer counterpart Steve Hoffer (Lake Placid, NY) notched five stops on the night.

Westfield State and WPI would finish the game even with shots (11-11) and corners (8-8).

Both teams will finish their regular seasons with road games on Saturday. The Boyton Hillers will take on MIT in Cambridge at 2:30pm and the Owls will travel to Salem State and play at 1pm.
