Michael DeSavage, most recently the head athletics trainer at Worcester State College and a former assistant at Holy Cross, has been named head athletics trainer at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, according to Dana Harmon, WPI's Director of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation.

DeSavage replaces Dave Abraham, who resigned in order to become an assistant athletics trainer for the Toronto Blue Jays major league baseball team. Abraham had been WPI's head trainer for 17 years.

"We are pleased that Michael DeSavage has decided to join the WPI athletic family," said Harmon. "We are confident his level of experience and knowledge will serve the WPI student-athlete well."

A native of nearby Auburn, Massachusetts, DeSavage graduated from Keene State College in Keene, NH with his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education/Athletic Training in 1992. He went on to earn his masters in kinesiology from Temple University in Philadelphia in January, 2000.

DeSavage has extensive experience both on the NCAA Division I and the Division III level. For the past two years, DeSavage has been the head athletics trainer at Worcester State College. During the 2000-2001 academic year, he was an assistant trainer at Holy Cross. From 1995 through 2000, he was first a graduate assistant and then an assistant athletic trainer at Temple. From 1992 through 1995, he was assistant trainer at Framingham State College.

DeSavage received his National Athletic Trainers' Association certification in February of 1993. He also owns a Massachusetts State Athletic Training License. His credentials also include American Red Cross CPR, First Aid and AED.
