Trinity Defeats WPI in Slugfest, 14-9

Hartford, CT --- Freshman Kent Graham (Longmeadow, MA) smashed two homeruns to help Trinity College to a 16-9 win over WPI on Monday afternoon. With the loss, WPI falls to 8-11 while Trinity ups its record to 14-3.
The Bantam's scored early, throwing six runs on the board in the first inning on three hits. Graham's performance was the story of the game, going 2-for-4 at the plate to knock in five runs and score three.
Down 6-0 in the top of the second, WPI scored a quick run when Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) hit his second home run of the season to cut the Bantam lead to 6-1. The Engineers did not get on the board again until the fifth inning when they exploded for eight runs on eight hits. Scott MacDonald (Gorham, ME) and Matt Fiore (Wakefield, MA) led off the inning with back-to-back singles before pinch hitter Dan Mahoney (Troy, NY) ripped a single down the left field line to load the bases. Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) plated MacDonald with a single of his own before Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) and Ethan Brown (Lunenburg, MA) combined for four runs on two base hits. In his second at bat of the inning, Fiore laced a double to center field to bring in three runs and cut the Bantam lead to 14-9.
Trinity responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame to increase their advantage to 16-9, before Andrew Rathmann-Noonan (Devon, PA) and Dan Meehan (Lake Oswego, OR) combined to throw for four scoreless innings to secure the victory for the Bantams.
Fiore led the offensive attack for WPI, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one run scored while Brown went 3-for-4 with two RBI. McGregor chipped in with 2 RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Lyle Miller (Milford, CT) absorbed the loss for the Engineers and falls to 0-2 on the season.
Up next, WPI plays host to Nichols on Tuesday at 3:30pm while Trinity travels to Bates for a NESCAC match up beginning at 3pm.
