Port Charlotte, FL --- The WPI Baseball team pounded out 21 hits on the day to complete a sweep of Northland College (WI) by scores of 9-1 and 12-6 on Tuesday afternoon.

In game one of the doubleheader, the Engineers scored six runs in the third inning en route to a 9-1 win.  WPI took advantage of a series of wild pitches and a Northland error woven between singles from Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) and Bryan Watkins (Belmont, MA) to jump out to the commanding 6-1 lead.

Dignum went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double, to knock in three RBI while scoring two runs to pace the Crimson and Gray.  Watkins was 2-for-3 with two runs and a RBI while Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) and Ryan Rainone (Oakville, CT) each collected a hit and an RBI in the victory.  Watkins, Swanton and Dignum each picked up a stolen base for the Engineers.

Pitcher Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury, MA) recorded his first win of the season, allowing three hits while striking out four in seven innings of work.

In game two, WPI strung together four singles and a double from sophomore Justin Deveau (Lowell, MA) to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  The Engineers tacked on eight more runs through the next five innings on hits from Jonathan Quintero (Miami, FL), Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA) and a three RBI triple from Watkins in the top of the sixth inning.

Watkins was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and three RBI while Quintero and Jameson Kokolis (Manchester, NH) were each 2-for-3 with one and two RBI, respectively.

Sophomore Ryan Marques (Gloucester, MA) pitched his way to his first victory of the season, yielding six runs on nine hits while striking out three.

With the sweep, the Engineers up their record to 4-2 on the young season and will be back in action on Thursday with a twinbill versus Lewis and Misericordia beginning at 10am.
