Worcester, MA --- Kris Breen (Griswold, CT) hit a walkoff home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Fitchburg State to a dramatic 13-12 victory over WPI in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon. The game was played at WPI with FSC as the home team due to unplayable field conditions in Fitchburg.
Breen's blast capped a wild ninth inning that saw the Engineers tie the game in the top of the frame with four runs, including homers from Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) and Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) and an RBI single off the bat of Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA).
A.J. Balderelli (Holland, MA) had an outstanding game for the Falcons. The left fielder launched three home runs and notched seven runs batted in. FSC tallied four runs in both the fifth and seventh innings to help rally back from 5-2 and 8-6 deficits. Curt Heher (Trumbull, CT) added a home run to go along with four RBI and Neil Gendron (Salem, MA) collected three hits and scored a pair of runs. Cather Justin Hubbard (Stamford, CT) did damage with his arm and legs, throwing out a pair of base stealers and scoring two runs on the day.
WPI (8-6) received hits from all ten players that recorded at-bats with the first six batters all collecting at least two hits. McGregor ripped three base knocks while McNee, Dignum, Bryan Watkins (Belmont, MA) and Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA) all drove in multiple runs.
Nick Ryan (Lowell, MA) got the final two outs in the top of the ninth for Fitchburg State (3-8), to earn the win and level his record at 1-1. Thomas Whiting (Farmington Hills, MI), who had retired the first two batters he faced after entering to start the bottom of the ninth, was saddled with the loss (0-1).
WPI is next in action on Thursday when they host city rival Worcester State at 3:30pm. FSC returns to the diamond on Friday at 3pm with a home contest against Western New England.
