Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College baseball team got
back on the winning track by sweeping WPI in a conference
doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Berry-Allen Field. The
Pride won the opening game, 5-3, and completed the sweep with a 7-4
victory in the second game.
The wins snap the Pride's eight game losing streak as it improves
to 5-10 overall, 2-2 in NEWMAC action. The Engineers fall to
10-9, 2-2.
The story of the afternoon was the outstanding pitching
performances Springfield received from Jimmy
Lisowski (Warwick, MA) and Jacob Feist
(Allentown, PA). In the opener, Lisowski was
spectacular on the mound as he went the distance, scattering just
five hits and striking out seven in seven innings of work.
Feist tossed a complete game in the second game, surrendering
just six hits and allowing four runs, in nine innings.
In the first game, Lisowski got out of a jam early in the top of
the first with runners on the corners and two outs. After
Scott McNee (Falmouth, MA) flied out to
Rex Cone (Bristol, CT), Cone gunned out
Bryan Watkins (Belmont, MA) at the plate to end
the inning.
Springfield jumped on the board first in the bottom of the first
inning when Jamie Mackie (Springfield, MA) scored
on a Casey Federico (Agawam, MA) sac fly to center
field. Mackie originally got on base after doubling down the
right field line.
WPI tied the game up at one in the fourth when WPI used
back-to-back hard hit doubles to plate a run. McNee hammered
a ball into deep left center field and Mike
Swanton (Foxboro, MA) followed that up with a shot to
right center, plating McNee.
The Pride blew open the game in the bottom half of the fourth,
plating four runs to take a 5-1 lead. Mackie highlighted the
inning with a deep two-RBI double over the right fielder's head,
scoring Joe Kropa (Cranford, NJ) and Drew
Michael (Longmeadow, MA).
WPI tacked on another run in the fifth with Matt
Moreau (Manchester, NH) crossing the plate on a Watkins
groundout. The Enginners scored the final run of the game and
cut the lead to two after McNee led off the sixth with a solo shot
to left center field.
Lisowski was spectacular on the mound as he went the distance,
scattering just five hits and striking out seven. Mackie
finished the game with three hits and a pair of RBI in the win,
while Luke Gabordi (Ledyard, CT), Justin
Nussey (Westminster, MA), and Cone all chipped in with two
hits.
Ryan Smalanskas (Shrewsbury, MA) suffered the loss
for WPI as hit gave up 10 hits and two earned runs. McNee was
the lone Enginner with a pair of hits in the loss.
In the second game of the twinbill, WPI struck first with a pair of
runs off Feist to open up the first inning. McNee cracked a
double to left center field which plated Watkins and Mark
Dignum (Albany, NY), who had previously reached on walks.
The Engineers added another run in the second when
Paul Galligan (Weymouth, MA) crossed the plate on
a Ethan Brown (Lunenburg, MA) groundout to
second.
Showing plenty of resilience, the Pride answered with three runs in
the bottom of the second to tie the game. Mackie once again
provided the highlights as his two-RBI single scored John Smaltz
and Mike Robilotto (East Meadow, NY).
Ryan Tatreau (Greenfield,
MA), who doubled to reach base, scored on an throwing error by the
pitcher, to tack on another Pride run.
WPI regained the lead in the third when Ryan
Rainone (Oakville, MA) scored on a groundout to first
after previously leading off the inning with a double.
In the bottom of the fourth, Springfield scored four times to grab
a 7-4 lead. Travis Turgeon (Norwich, CT) was
hit by a pitch on a full count with the bases loaded to bring in
Smaltz. Next up, Gabordi was also plunked, forcing in Kropa.
With the bases still loaded, Mackie crossed the plate on a
passed ball, while Gabordi scored another Pride run after a botched
pickoff attempt.
Feist was in control the entire game as he went nine innings,
surrendering four runs off six hits. Mackie went 2 for 5 with
two RBI while Tatreau added two hits and a run scored.
Rainone was the lone member of the Engineers to record a pair of
hits in the game. Ryan Marques (Gloucester,
MA) was served with the loss after going 3 1/3 innings and allowing
seven runs, four earned, off six hits and four walks.
Springfield returns to action on Tuesday afternoon with a contest
against cross-town rival WNEC. First pitch is slated for
3:30pm. WPI is back on the diamond on Monday, hosting
nationally ranked Trinity at 3pm.
