Worcester, MA --- WPI is proud to host the 2009 NEWMAC Baseball Tournament this week at Class of 1893 Field. The top-seeded Engineers (21-9, 9-3 NEWMAC) will host at least the first two days of the tournament, and could host days three and four if WPI advances. The tournament will begin with a first round game Thursday vs. sixth-seeded Clark (13-19, 4-8 NEWMAC) at 3:30pm.

Fifth-seeded Springfield will travel to face #2 Wheaton and fourth-seed Babson will head to Cambridge to take on #3 MIT in other NEWMAC Tournament first round action.

Rain caused a postponement of the start of the four-day tournament, originally scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

The host Engineers are piloted by fourth-year coach Mike Callahan, who has guided WPI to many notable accomplishments this season, including a road win over defending national champion Trinity and the first conference doubleheader sweep at Wheaton in the history of NEWMAC play. The latter allowed the Engineers to clinch a share of the NEWMAC regular season title, its first in the 106-year history of the program, and the #1 seed in the NEWMAC Tournament.
