Box Score

New London, CT --- Senior Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI) allowed just two singles and struck out ten over eight innings and WPI scored nine times in the fourth inning en route to a 13-0 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Tuesday afternoon.

Fahey (4-1) allowed a leadoff single to freshman Joe Petry (Worcester, MA) and a single to senior Steve Lewis (Warner Robins, GA) in the sixth, but that was all. The senior only walked one while recording double figure strikeouts for the fourth time this season and tenth time in his career. Fahey hasn't allowed an earned run in his last 16 innings and only two in his last 23 innings over three starts (0.78 ERA).

WPI (18-9, 7-3) got all it would need in the third on a sacrifice fly by junior Joe Walsh (Weymouth, MA) and a bases loaded walk to freshman Mitch McClune (Pembroke, MA) for a 2-0 lead.

The Engineers sent 13 batters to the plate in the fourth and scored nine runs to take an 11-0 lead. Freshman Nick Bean (Middleboro, MA) had an RBI double, junior Mark Dignum (Albany, NY) had a two-run single, junior Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) added an RBI double and junior Cody McGregor (Westfield, MA) closed out the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Coast Guard sophomore Ben Barrett (Bremen, GA) pitched five solid innings of relief allowing just five hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out one. Senior Pete Schofield (Warwick, RI) worked the first three innings and took the loss to drop to 3-3.

Dignum, Bean and McGregor each had two hits for WPI.

Junior Keith Laird (West Chester, PA) had a double in the ninth, the only extra base hit for Coast Guard.

WPI is back in action on Wednesday, continuing a road swing with a non-conference matchup with Brandeis at 3:30pm. Coast Guard is off until Thursday, when it travels to take on Mass-Maritime, also at 3:30pm.
