Fahey Adds All-New England Nod to Season Full of Accolades

Conor Fahey
Medford, MA --- WPI senior starting pitcher Conor Fahey (Cumberland, RI) has been named to the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association Division III Baseball first team. The award is another in an outstanding season full of honors for Fahey, who has helped lead the Engineers to a school record for wins and the program's first ever NCAA Tournament bid in '09.
Fahey has been dominant this year in tying the school record for wins (8-1). The senior co-captain currently sports a 1.40 ERA and has an impressive 115 strikeouts in 96 1/3 innings this season. Fahey has three complete games this year while also leading the team in saves (3). He was named NEWMAC Player of the Week three times in '09, and added a NEWMAC Pitcher of the Year award to his trophy case after leading WPI to it's first ever share of the conference regular season title.
Fahey was the only player from the NEWMAC named to the All-New
England first team. Five NEWMAC players were selected to the second
team, including Tom Phillips (Durham, NC) from
MIT, Nick Pecora (Highland Park, NJ), Sean
Munley (Trenton, NJ) and Josh Simmons
(Cranston, RI) from Wheaton and Andrew Aizenstadt
(Norwell, MA) from Babson.
Shawn Gilbair (Windham, CT) from Eastern
Connecticut took home his second Player of the Year award, while
Jeremiah Bayer (Greenfield, MA) from Trinity was
NEIBA Pitcher of the Year. Southern Maine's Ed
Flaherty was honored with the Coach of the Year award.
WPI is currently taking part in its first NCAA Tournament in the 106-year history of the baseball program. The Engineers (30-11) are currently playing in the tournament's New England Regional winner's bracket following wins over Suffolk, 7-6, and Babson, 15-5, this week. The Crimson and Gray will face defending national champion Trinity this evening at 7:45pm at Eastern Connecticut. A WPI win would place them in the regional championship game on Sunday. WPI defeated Trinity earlier this season, 9-7, at Trinity. It marked Trinity's first loss to a New England opponent in 49 games.
