Pomona, NY --- WPI Baseball alumnus Alex Venditti '16 was recently picked up by the Ottawa Champions of the independent CanAm League. He filled in for Ricky Oropesa, who was retroactively placed on the disabled list as of August 3rd.

"I'm very happy for Alex," commented WPI head coach Mike Callahan. "He worked extremely hard and has always wanted to play professional baseball and now he's getting that opportunity and fulfilling a lifelong dream"

The first baseman batted .250 this past weekend with a double, triple and a home run – in consecutive games – versus the Rockland Boulders. After seeing his first action in a pinch hitting appearance Thursday, Venditti displayed his ability to hit to all fields by sending his double to left, triple to center and home run to right.

"Playing professional baseball is something you dream of as a little kid," remarked Venditti. "The fact that I have been given a chance to play is dream come true for me. I want to thank all my friends and family for their support. Special thanks to Coach Callahan for helping on this journey."

Over his four years on Boynton Hill, Venditti batted .374 with 143 RBI, 46 runs, 166 hits (12 2B, 1 3B, 16 HR), 77 walks and an OBP of 1.146. In addition to bookending his career with NEWMAC Rookie of the Year accolades in 2013 and Player of the Year honors in 2016, Venditti was an American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com All-America, as well as the New England Baseball Journal Division III Player of the Year in his final campaign.
