WPI Closes Out Season with Loss to St. Lawrence
St. Lawrence 31, WPI 7
Worcester, MA -- St. Lawrence University quarterback
Matt Bezio threw for three touchdowns and ran for
another, as the Saints capped off their first winning season in 15
years with a 31-7 triumph over WPI in the two teams' Liberty League
finale at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.
The hosts held a 7-3 lead in the second quarter after quarterback
Rob Pantalone (Camp Hill, PA; 16 of 37 for 248
yards passing) scored on a nifty QB keeper from two yards out,
before Bezio (16 of 27, 190 yards) completely took over. The
Engineers only held the lead for three minutes before Bezio capped
off a nine-play, 49-yard drive with an 11-yard scoring strike to
Jeremy Cronin. St. Lawrence didn't look back from
there, as it mixed in a punishing ground game that averaged 5.2
yards per carry with Bezio's passing prowess.
Early in the third quarter, the Saints recovered a WPI fumble at
their own 42, then marched 58 yards in six plays as Mike
O'Donnell (Haverhill, MA) then hauled in a 30-yard
touchdown pass from Bezio to make it 17-7 SLU.
The Saints added to their lead at the start of the fourth quarter,
as Bezio connected with Cronin from 25 yards out for his second
touchdown reception of the game.
WPI then turned the ball over on downs on its next possession.
Before the next SLU drive threatened to stall at midfield, Bezio
kept it himself on third-and-4 and galloped for a 50-yard touchdown
run to end the scoring.
Josh Izzo led the Saints' rushing attack with 15 carries for 75
yards, while Bezio chipped in with 65 yards on five carries. On the
WPI side, Matt Burger (Ballston Lake, NY) had 10
receptions for 141 yards while Mike Butler (Athol,
MA) caught five passes for 78 yards. Dustin
Bradway (Glastonbury, CT) racked up 10 tackles for the
Engineers, while Hank Anderson had eight tackles for St.
Lawrence.
The Saints finished the year at 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the Liberty
League. WPI dropped to 3-6 overall with a 0-6 record in conference
play.
