Shoemaker and Champagne Earn ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Honors

Worcester, MA --- WPI football student-athletes Jonathan Shoemaker and Aaron Champagne have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Both picked up first team honors and will now advance to the national ballot.
Shoemaker was one of four defensive backs who were selected to the first team in the College Division, which is comprised of NCAA Division II and III and NAIA programs in New England, New York and Eastern Canada. Champagne is one of two running backs to receive the honor.
Shoemaker carries a 3.46 GPA while majoring in biomedical engineering. He is the recipient of WPI's Medical Profession Scholarship and is also a member of the Senior Honor Society and the Pre-Med Society. During his junior year, Shoemaker's IQP Project helped develop a portable respiratory inhaler, while as a senior, his MQP Project developed a toggle pin procedure for hip dysplasia in dogs. He is the President of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and a member of Interfraternity Council.
On the field, Shoemaker has recorded 25 tackles this season, including tallying a career-high five stops in a 23-10 win over the US Merchant Marine Academy. He's notched four pass-breakups and his two interceptions tie him for the team lead.
Shoemaker, a native of East Harwich, NY, is the son of John and Suzanne.
Champagne boasts a perfect 4.00 GPA while majoring in civil engineering. Honored as a Charles O. Thompson Scholar as top 10% of the freshman class, he completed his Humanities and Arts Sufficiency in History.
As WPI's starting running back, Champagne is third on the team with four touchdowns scored (two rushing, two receiving). He amassed a career-high 103 yards rushing in 31-10 victory over Worcester State and also hauled in four passes for 37 yards in a loss to nationally ranked Rensselaer. Champagne's 510 all-purpose yards currently rank him third on the team.
Champagne, a native of Fairfield, ME, is the son of Steve and Cheryl.
The Engineers currently sport a 6-3 overall record for 10-year head coach Ed Zaloom. WPI will wrap up the 2008 season with a noon contest at St. Lawrence on Saturday.
