Mello Selected LL Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Ernie Mello

Worcester MA --- Running back Ernie Mello (Wilmington, MA) has been chosen Liberty League Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week.  The sophomore shares the honor with Rochester quarterback Braezen Subick.

Mello totaled 106 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns on just 10 touches to help WPI defeat Becker 52-0.  He rushed for 54 yards on nine carries while collecting a pair of 1-yard TD runs.  Mello's only reception of the game came on a nifty 52-yard touchdown catch and run from quarterback Pat McAuley (Hingham, MA).

On the season, Mello has rushed for 126 yards and four touchdowns on just 25 carries.  He leads the 3-0 Engineers with five touchdowns overall and 30 points.

It marks the fourth time a WPI player has been recognized by the Liberty League.  Last week freshman defensive back Elante Moore (Alexandria, VA) shared Rookie of the Week honors while on September 7th senior quarterback Mike Swanton (Foxboro, MA) was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week and junior linebacker Michael Oliveri (Milford, MA) took home Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

WPI opens up Liberty League play on Saturday at 2pm when they host rival Rensselaer.  It will mark the 103rd meeting between the two schools and the coveted Transit Trophy will be on the line.
