  • WPI Athletics Announces 2016-17 Department Award Winners

    Worcester, MA-- The WPI athletic department recently honored all of its 20 varsity teams which encompasses over 600 student-athletes at its annual awards banquet. During the festivities, 11 student-athletes were presented with major awards. These accolades highlight some of the best varsity student-athletes at WPI who excel both in the classroom and in their respective sports.
  • Sperone Named Full-Time Football Assistant Coach

    WORCESTER – WPI Head Football Coach Chris Robertson has announced the hiring of Scott Sperone as the program’s newest assistant coach. The co-defensive coordinator replaces Dan Mulrooney who is now the head coach at Anna Maria.
  • Hall of Fame Coach Merl Norcross Passes Away

    WORCESTER --- Legendary WPI coach Merl M. Norcross died Jan. 7, 2017 at his home in upstate New York after an illness. The longtime Holden resident was an Associate Professor of Physical Education and the Track and Field coach at WPI for five decades.
  • Murtagh Completes Awards Circuit with D3football All-America Honorable Mention Nod

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI senior Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) has been named a D3football.com All-America Honorable Mention. He becomes the program’s second honoree, joining first team specialist selection Ernie Mello ’12 in 2011.
  • Football's Murtagh and McAllen Highlight 26th Annual Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team

    WORCESTER – Senior Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) and freshman Sean McAllen (Prospect, CT) garnered major awards in the 26th edition of the Steve “Merc” Morris All-Star Team, as selected by the sports information directors within Worcester Country who sponsor football. Murtagh was tabbed the Co-Defensive Player of the Year while McAllen was selected as the Freshman of the Year.
  • Murtagh and Bursey Claim All-East Region Selections from D3football.com

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI seniors Brian Murtagh and Blaine Bursey have been named to the D3football.com All-East Region team. Murtagh picked up first team accolades as a linebacker while Bursey garnered third team honors as a placekicker.
  • Pope Represents WPI and Liberty League on Academic All-America D-III Football Team

    WORCESTER – WPI senior Will Pope (Middlebury, CT) has been selected as an Academic All-America second team member by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
  • Murtagh Earns Spot on New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England Team

    WORCESTER – For the second time in three years, WPI senior Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) has earned a spot on the New England Football Writers Division II/III All-New England team. He was previously tabbed as a sophomore.
  • McAllen Tabbed Liberty League Football Rookie of the Year; 12 More Engineers Recognized

    Troy, NY --- Freshman running back Sean McAllen was named the Liberty League Football Rookie of the Year as seniors Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) and Blaine Bursey took home first team accolades as voted upon by the league’s head coaches following the regular season.
  • Football Falls Short to Nationally-Ranked St. Lawrence in Liberty League Finale

    WORCESTER -- The St. Lawrence Saints scored 14 fourth-quarter points, capped by a 35-yard punt return by senior James Holley-Grisham en route to a 28-21 win over host WPI on Senior Day at Alumni Field.
  • Last Minute TD Pass from Rice to Thulin Gives Football 37-34 Thriller Over Rochester

    Rochester, NY --- Blake Rice threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead visiting WPI to a come-from-behind 37-34 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
  • WPI Places 20 on Liberty League Football All-Academic Team

    Troy, NY --- Led by four-time honoree Vinny Tavernelli (Plymouth, MA), 20 WPI student-athletes were named to the Liberty League Football All-Academic Team. The Engineers racked up 174 selections under seventh-year head coach Chris Robertson. During that time, WPI has boasted the most honorees five times, including 30 in 2012 and again in 2013. Overall, the Crimson and Gray have touted 209 during their tenure in the Liberty League.
  • Lynch, Pope and Tavernelli Garner Academic All-District I Football Accolades

    WORCESTER --- A trio of WPI football upperclassmen have been named Academic All-District I, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The district covers institutions in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. They are now on the ballot for Academic All-America honors.
  • Late Hobart Touchdown Stuns Football in Game Featuring Five Fourth Quarter Lead Changes

    WORCESTER -- Junior Shane Sweeney became Hobart’s single-season passing leader, and senior Jack Pfohl scored an 18-yard touchdown with three seconds to go as the Statesmen upended host WPI, 35-31, in a Liberty League football game Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
  • Pacheco, Again, Named to D3football.com Team of the Week

    Minneapolis, MN --- WPI junior Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA) has been tabbed as a member of the D3football.com Team of the Week. He named the WPI Men’s Student-Athlete of the Week and a Liberty League Honor Roll selection yesterday (Monday).

  • Football Engineers Sweep; Transit Trophy Returns to Worcester

    Troy, NY --- Junior Dereck Pacheco (Barnstable, MA) logged 10 tackles, including 2.5 for-loss, a sack and a key safety in the fourth quarter, as WPI reclaimed the Transit Trophy with a 19-7 victory over host RPI Saturday in a Liberty League football tilt at East Campus Stadium.
  • Football Set to Face RPI for the Transit Trophy - What is the Transit Trophy?

    The 110th football meeting between rivals WPI and Rensselaer will take place Saturday afternoon at 1pm in Troy. RPI enjoys a 58-46-5 advantage in the series including a 28-21 victory last season in Worcester but the two teams have split their last six meetings. The coveted Transit Trophy will be on the line. RPI sports a 24-11-1 mark since the trophy was first awarded in 1980. Read below for more information on this unique college football trophy.

    The WPI Athletic Department, Poly Club, and Hall of Fame Selection Committee is proud to announce its 34th Class, the Class of 2016. The six newest members were inducted on Friday, October 7th as part of Homecoming Weekend. The inductees include: Edwin B. (Ted) Coghlin Jr. ’56 (Contributor), Craig Dempsey ’81 (Football and Wrestling), Joseph Moskowitz ’05 (Wrestling), Kevin Ranucci ’96 (Football), Michael Shannon ’97 (Men’s Basketball) and Michael Sorrentino ’02 (Baseball).
  • Merchant Marine Stuns Football in Wild Second Half; Eckler Sets Career Total Offense Record

    WORCESTER – Junior Justin Sydlowski’s (Plymouth, MI) interception with 2:13 to play eventually led to the game-winning field goal by classmate Jake McDonough (Wilmington, NC) with 13 seconds left to lift visiting Merchant Marine to a 45-44 victory over WPI in a Liberty League matchup Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

    Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College football team strung together 28-unanswered points and held on for a thrilling 28-23 win over WPI on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field in Liberty League play.
  • Eckler Scores Coveted New England Football Writers Gold Helmet

    Cambridge, MA --- WPI football senior Dan Eckler (Stoughton, MA) was selected as the New England Football Writers Division II/III Gold Helmet recipient for his play last week at Norwich. He is the first Engineer to earn the award since Mitch McClune in 2012 and the first Crimson and Gray offensive selection since Justin Wells in 2005.
  • Murtagh and Eckler Secure Liberty League Football Weekly Honors

    Troy, NY --- WPI football seniors Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) and Dan Eckler (Stoughton, MA) were lauded by the Liberty League for their play this past weekend at Norwich. Murtagh was tabbed defensive performer of the week while Eckler was named the co-offensive performer of the week.
  • Eckler and Murtagh Help Football Cruise to 40-17 Victory at Norwich

    Northfield, VT -- Dan Eckler (Stoughton, MA) threw for 342 yards, including touchdowns strikes to four different receivers, and ran for an additional score, while Brian Murtagh (Wayland, MA) led players with 14 tackles and chipped in with an interception as WPI went on the road and defeated Norwich 40-17 in a non-conference football contest played on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a perfect 3-0 record while the host Cadets slip to 0-3.
  • Bursey Claims Spot on D3football.com Team of the Week

    Minneapolis, MN --- Senior Blaine Bursey (Middleburg, FL) was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week. The kicker was previously named a repeat Liberty League Special Teams Performer of the Week. He becomes the first honoree since Jason Lamb was tabbed last October.
  • Football's Eckler, Bursey and Lamb Recognized by the Liberty League

    Troy, NY --- Seniors Dan Eckler (Stoughton, MA) and Blaine Bursey (Middleburg, FL) took home Liberty League football weekly honors for their contributions Friday night versus Worcester State. Eckler was named the offensive performer of the week as Bursey repeated as special teams performer of the week. Senior Jason Lamb (Plymouth, MA) was placed on the honor roll.
