Westwood, MA --- WPI senior Blake Rice (North Branford, CT) and junior Brian Mahan (Ashland, MA) have garnered NEWMAC Football weekly honors. Rice was tabbed as the NEWMAC Co-Offensive Athlete of the Week along with Merchant Marine senior Brice Moore (Pace, FL) while Mahan was named as the NEWMAC Defensive Athlete of the Week.
Rice, the WPI Male Student-Athlete of the Week and a Noontime Sports Team of the Week selection, tossed a season-high and career-equaling best three touchdowns as the Crimson and Gray went to Washington DC and defeated Catholic 31-14 in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The senior captain finished the day 18 for 28 passing for 210 yards and added 40 yards on the ground.
Mahan, who was also named to the D3football.com Team of the Week, hauled in a career-best three interceptions. His first pick led to a WPI touchdown that tied the game at 7-7 and his final pick in the end zone sealed the victory in the waning moments. Mahan was also credited with a pass breakup.
Rice and Moore will go head-to-head on Saturday, October 21 as the Engineers (4-2, 2-1) welcome the Mariners (3-2, 2-1) for a 2:30pm kickoff in Alumni Stadium.
