Hassett Scores Go-Ahead Tally in 2-1 thriller

WPI 2, Salve Regina 1

Box Score

Newport, RI --- Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to lift WPI to a thrilling 2-1 win over Salve Regina University in a non-conference field hockey game Tuesday afternoon.

With the score tied, Hassett netted an assist from freshman Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) just before the final buzzer. It was Johnson who had tied the game for the Engineers (2-0) just before halftime when she scored unassisted in the 31st minute.

Salve Regina (0-2) took an early lead when junior Whitney Bushee (Duxbury, MA) scored her first goal of the season on a penalty stroke in the eighth minute of the game. Despite getting nine shots off, the Seahawks put just three on goal. WPI goalie Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) made two saves to help preserve the win.

WPI will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Regis beginning at 4pm.
