WPI Field Hockey Defeats Nichols 3-1

Box ScoreWorcester, MA --- Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA) registered a goal and two assists as WPI defeating visiting Nichols 3-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday night. The Engineers are now 7-1 on the season while Nichols falls to 2-5.
WPI opened the scoring at the 21:00 minute mark when Hassett found Sarah Tracy (Oakland, ME), who deposited her third goal of the year. Early in the second half, Hassett connected with senior co-captain Jenelle Pope (Sterling, MA) which resulted in a 2-0 Crimson and Gray advantage.
The Bison sliced the lead in half midway through the second stanza when Kari Harvey (Nantucket, MA) tallied her first goal of the season. Hassett provide WPI an insurance goal when she netted her fifth marker of the year in the closing minutes.
Freshman MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, MA) was outstanding in net for Nichols, collecting 12 saves while Brittney Case (Cambridge, NY) recorded a defensive save for the Bison. Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) picked up the win in goal for WPI.
Both teams return to action on Saturday. WPI will open up NEWMAC play with a 1pm trip to Wheaton while Nichols entertains Anna Maria at 11am in CCC action.
