WPI drops NEWMAC game to Springfield, 3-0
Springfield 3, WPI 0
Springfield, MA --- The Springfield College field hockey team
defeated WPI, 3-0, tonight in a New England Women's and Men's
Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game at SC's Benedum Field.
With the win, 16th-ranked Springfield is now 10-3 overall and 5-0
in NEWMAC play (tops in the league), while WPI falls to 10-4
overall and 2-3 in conference play. SC has now won three straight,
while WPI had a two-game win streak snapped.
In today's match, it was junior forward Eileen
Jenkins (Gorham, ME) who put Springfield into the lead by
scoring a goal at 15:03 into the contest. The goal was
unassisted.
The 1-0 score stood up into the second half when the Pride struck
again at the 45:53 mark. This time it was sophomore forward
Jane Kelleher (Chatham, MA) who found the back of
the net. The assist went to Jenkins. Kelleher then added a final
unassisted tally with just 7:17 left in the game. For Kelleher, her
12th and 13th goals of the season at least temporarily allow her to
take over the league-lead in that category.
Two goalkeepers played one half each for the Pride in this game.
Junior Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, CT) came up with
one save in the first half, while junior Julia
Kincade (Durham, NH) made five saves in the second
stanza.
For WPI, junior Mary Kate Toomey made 17 saves as she played all 70
minutes.
Springfield next plays on Saturday, Oct. 14th at 4:00 p.m. when it
hosts Wheaton College on Homecoming Day. WPI will host Wellesley
College on the same day at 11:00 a.m.
