Wellesley Defeats WPI Field Hockey 2-1

and Elizabeth Kelley (Lynnfield, MA) notched goals
as Wellesley College rallied for a 2-1 road victory over WPI in
NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday morning. With the win, the
Blue ups their record to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in NEWMAC play while
WPI drops to 10-5 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.
WPI got on the board first when Nicole Maglione
(Charlton, MA) buried a shot far post following a 3-on-1 break
opportunity at 27:43. Freshman Kelly Johnson
(Buxton, ME) was credited with her team-best sixth assist on the
play that led to Maglione's team-high ninth goal.
Wellesley then kicked its offensive into high gear and was rewarded
when Lekas tallied her eighth goal of the season in the waning
moments of the first half. The goal, at 32:16, was unassisted. The
Blue took the lead when Katie Sang (Cupertino, CA)
fed Kelley for her ninth goal at 48:59.
For the game, Wellesley enjoyed a 24-5 advantage in shots and a
15-5 edge in penalty corners.
Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) registered two saves
on the afternoon for the Wellesley. Mary Kate
Toomey (Worcester, MA) stopped 12 shots for WPI, while
Sarah White (Portland, ME) and Elizabeth
Carey (Salem, NH) tallied defensive saves in the losing
effort.
Both teams will return to action on Tuesday afternoon at 4pm with
contests versus NEWMAC rivals. WPI hosts Smith in the second of
three straight home contests while Wellesley closes out a brief two
game road swing with a trip to Wheaton.
