Maglinone Nets Two Goals in 4-1 Victory over Smith

Worcester, MA --- Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) collected a pair of goals and an assist in the first half to help WPI defeat visiting Smith College 4-1 in NEWMAC Field Hockey action Tuesday afternoon. The Engineers improve to 11-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play and in the process clinch a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time under fifth year head coach Johanna DiCarlo.

Maglione, who now has 11 goals on the year, helped WPI sprint out to a 3-0 halftime lead by netting a goal just 1:57 in on a feed from Stacey Mohr (Tyngsboro, MA). She added an unassisted goal at 13:43 before dealing out a helper on Katie Nehmer's (Southwick, MA) third goal of the season at 24:30.

Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) scored for Smith in the opening minutes of the second half off a nice pass from Linnea Michaels (Huntington Sta. NY). Jenelle Pope (Sterling, MA) provided WPI a key insurance goal when she netted an unassisted tally at 51:02.

Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) registered two saves on the afternoon for WPI while Elizabeth Carey (Salem, NH) was credited with her third defensive save of the year. Chelsea Henderson (White Plains, NY) made four saves for the Pioneers, who are now 4-10 on the season and 1-5 in NEWMAC play.

WPI is off until next Tuesday when they wrap up the regular season with a home contest versus Mount Holyoke. Smith returns to action on Saturday as they entertain Babson at 1pm.
