WPI Field Hockey Defeats Mount Holyoke 2-1 to End Season
WPI 2, Mount Holyoke 1
Box ScoreWorcester, MA --- Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME)
netted a goal and an assist as WPI scored two goals in the first
nine minutes then withstood a furious Mount Holyoke rally in a 2-1
NEWMAC conference victory on Tuesday evening. With the win, WPI
concludes regular season play with a 12-5 overall record and 4-4
mark in NEWMAC action while Mount Holyoke dips to 5-12 and 2-6 in
conference play.
WPI broke into the scoring column just 1:16 into the game when
Katie Nehmer (Southwick, MA) took a feed from
Johnson and blasted a shot past the Mount Holyoke goalie for her
fourth tally of the season. Just under seven minutes later, Johnson
notched her eighth marker of the year when she finished a nifty
pass from the stick of Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) at 8:07.
Mount Holyoke staged a spirited rally in the second half and were
rewarded when Ariana Baudouin (Norwalk, CT) found
the back of the net following a penalty corner with 12:40 remaining
in regulation. Susan West (Gwynedd Valley, PA) was
credited with an assist on Baudouin's third tally of the season.
That was as close as the Lyons would get despite outshoting the
Engineers 6-1 in the second half and earning four more penalty
corners (4-0).
Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) made four saves
on the evening, including three in the second half, en route to
improving her record to 9-4. Allie Walsh (Ann
Arbor, MI) registered four saves for the Lyons while Baudouin
pulled of the rare feat of scoring a goal and making a defensive
save.
Both teams open up NEWMAC tournament play on Saturday. Fifth-seeded
WPI will travel to fourth-seeded Babson while eighth-seeded Mount
Holyoke ventures to top-seeded Wellesley.
