Kelly Johnson and coach Johanna DiCarlo Nab Big Awards in NEWMAC Field Hockey
Worcester, MA -- WPI's Kelly Johnson was named
NEWMAC Rookie of the Year and head coach Johanna
DiCarlo was selected NEWMAC Coach of the Year in voting by
the conference field hockey coaches. Sophomore Nicole
Maglione earned first team honors while Johnson placed on
the second team.
Johnson (Buxton, ME) wasted no time bursting onto the collegiete field hockey scene. She stepped right in and took over the center midfield position for the Engineers. Johnson registered eight goals and a team-best seven assists on the season. Her seven helpers are the most by a WPI player since the 1999 campaign.
DiCarlo, a native of Dracut, MA and a former Bentley standout, orchestrated an amazing turnaround of the WPI program. Her squad went 12-6 this past season and earned the fifth-seed in the ultra-competitive NEWMAC. The 12 wins are the most since 1999 and no WPI team has had more victories since 1993.
The Engineers led the conference in scoring defense (1.017 goals
per game) in DiCarlo's fifth season at the helm.
Maglione (Charlton, MA) paced the WPI offensive attack from the
center forward position with 11 goals and five assists. She notched
five game-winning goals this season, including a pair in NEWMAC
play. Her 11 goals and 27 points are the most by a WPI player since
1999. Maglione also earned second team All-NEWMAC and Rookie of the
Year honors and an All-New England selection last spring on the
softball diamond.
Maglione was also one of three Engineers to earn All-NEWMAC
Academic Team accolades. Also earning those honors were juniors
Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA) and Katie Nehmer (Southwick,
MA).
