Maggie Elbag Named to the All-NEWMAC Field Hockey First Team

Babson Park, MA --- WPI junior field hockey player Maggie Elbag has been selected to the NEWMAC All-Conference first team on voting by conference coaches on Tuesday. Elbag was one of four defenders named to the first team.

Elbag, a native of Rutland, MA, anchored a defense by tallying a NEWMAC-best nine defensive saves over the course of the season. Elbag notched four of those saves in a loss to nationally ranked and eventual NEWMAC tournament championship Springfield.  Her nine defensive saves were an eye-popping six more then the next highest in the league.  Elbag would finish the year with two goals, three assists, and seven points.

Additionally, the field hockey team captured the Sportsmanship Award, as voted on by the field hockey student-athletes of the NEWMAC. It marks the first time that the Engineers field hockey program has been recognized with the award since its inception in the fall of 2006.  WPI coached by first year head coach Lisa Moreau and was assisted by Jessica Farell ‘06 and Angela Notaro. The captains included Mary Kate Toomey (Worcester, MA), Heather Hassett (Oxford, MA), and Stacey Mohr (Tyngsboro, MA).

Jane Kelleher of Springfield was named NEWMAC Player of the Year.  Wellesley's Katie Frett was recognized as Rookie of the Year while her coach Rebecca Vaill garnered Coach of the Year honors.
