Kelly Johnson
WPI 1, Western New England 0
Worcester, MA --- Kelly Johnson (Buxton, ME) scored midway through the second half to lift WPI to a 1-0 shutout over visiting Western New England College in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Engineers up their record to 3-2 while Western New England slips to 0-5.
The Crimson and Gray scored the only goal of the contest in the 54th minute when Johnson deposited a pass from Jackie McDonough (Winchester, MA) into the back of the net following a penalty corner. It was the first goal of the season for Johnson and tenth of her career. The junior was NEWMAC Rookie of the Year in 2006 but missed a majority of the 2007 campaign with a season-ending injury.
The assist was McDonough's second of the year, tying her for the team lead with Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA).
Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT) turned away two shots en route to posting her third shutout of the season. Western New England goalkeeper Lindsey Orszulak (Longmeadow, MA) was outstanding in net for the Golden Bears. The freshman was credited with nine stops while Jessica Abelson (Pittsford, NY) aided the WNEC defensive effort with a pair of defensive saves.
For the night, WPI enjoyed a 20-3 edge in shots, including a 14-1 advantage in the second half.
Both teams return to the field on Thursday for 7pm contests against local rivals. WPI entertains cross-town foe Worcester State while Western New England travels to Westfield State.
