Northampton, RI --- First year Phoebe Hopkins (Philadelphia, PA) scored three goals this evening to lead the Pioneers past New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival WPI. With the victory, Smith improved to 6-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference while WPI dropped to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the NEWMAC.
Sophomore Rebecca Capute (Easton, MD) put Smith on the board in the opening minutes (3:22) as she slammed a shot from the right side of the circle past WPI keeper Betsy Ray (Simsbury, CT). Mary Kate Long (Boylston, MA) tallied Smith's second goal, and the first of three off penalty corners for the Pioneers, with an assist from Anika Goodhue (Bennington, VT) to give Smith a 2-0 lead. WPI closed to within one less than three minutes later when Sasha Marokhovsky (Upton, MA) scored from in front of the left post. Hopkins scored her first of three goals when she tipped in a shot by Trina Campbell (San Anselmo, CA) at the 24:24 mark to put Smith up 3-1. Nicole Maglione (Charlton, MA) answered with a goal less than two minutes later to again close the gap to one. The Pioneers took a 4-2 lead into the half after Campbell assisted on her second goal of the night when her long hit found first year Sarah Knowles (North Kingstown, RI).
The Pioneers broke the game open in the second half when Hopkins, Knowles and Capute each scored to give Smith a 7-2 lead. Maglione tallied the last goal for WPI and Hopkins her third for Smith in the closing minutes of the game. Sophomore Courtney Murphy (Northampton, MA) picked up her third win of the season in goal as she stopped four shots and allowed three goals. Ray took the loss for WPI.
The Pioneers are in action on Saturday, October 25 when they travel to NEWMAC opponent Wheaton College for a 1 pm contest. After closing out a three-game road trip, WPI returns home on Saturday for a 4:30pm game against Springfield.
