Worcester, MA --- Sasha Marokhovsky (Upton, MA) scored her third and fourth goals of the season and Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, MA) had the game-winner as WPI improved to 8-2 on the season with a 3-2 victory over visiting Babson in a NEWMAC conference field hockey matchup on Saturday afternoon.

WPI (2-0 NEWMAC) joins Clark (1-0) as the only squads in the nine-team conference to sport undefeated league records.  The Beavers, the defending NEWMAC champions, drop to 6-5 with a 2-1 mark in the conference standings.

Babson's Caroline Malone (Walpole, MA) got the Beavers on the board early, knocking in a rattled pass in front of the goal by Alex Cabreros (San Diego, CA) to give her team a 1-0 lead just 3:20 into the game.

WPI would answer seven minutes later when Marokhovsky took advantage of diving lunge by goalkeeper to shoot it high and into the net, knotting the game at 1-1 with 24:42 left in the half.

Marokhovsky would come up huge again with 4:59 remaining in the first period, as she took a great Celena Dopart (Washington, DC) pass through the defense, blasting it past the goalkeeper and into the lower left hand corner of the net. WPI would go into halftime up 2-1.

The lead would quickly evaporate just 1:13 into the second half, as Malone would score off a corner into the far post on an assist by Morgan Lockwood (Feeding Hills, MA), who set up Malone with a near-perfect pass into the corner of the crease.

Then with 10:39 remaining in the game, Barboza took advantage of a scramble of players in front of the Babson goal, knocking the ball in over a sprawling Babson defender to score the eventual game-winner.

WPI goalkeeper Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) had three saves on the day, including blocking away a potential game-tying shot on a Babson scramble in front of her goal with just over five minutes remaining.  Babson goalkeeper Jess Pashos (Winchester, MA) had five saves.

WPI outshot Babson 10-7, while the Beavers enjoyed a 6-3 edge in corners.

The Engineers will return to action on Tuesday as they head to MIT for a 6pm matchup. Babson also plays next on Tuesday hosting the Cougars of Clark, also in a 6pm game.
