Worcester, MA --- Springfield's Lynne Donoghue (Barnstable, MA) scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory over host WPI on Saturday afternoon in a NEWMAC conference game.
Springfield is now 2-9 with a 2-2 mark in conference games. The Engineers fall to 8-4 with a 2-2 record in the NEWMAC conference.
The Pride struck early on, taking a 1-0 lead just 5:33 into the game when Donoghue took a pass from Kelly Gallo (Westfield, MA) and sent a shot past the goalkeeper from the right side. It proved to be the only score of the period as Springfield went into halftime up 1-0. The second half was a defensive struggle as neither team could find the back of the net.
Springfield goalkeeper Grace Bibber (Damariscotta, ME) had three saves, picking up the first victory of her career.
WPI goalkeeper Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) had nine saves, including an impressive stop on a penalty stroke by Springfield's Alexa Carlson (New Milford, CT) with 22 seconds remaining in the game. Becca Sharpe (Concord, NH) added and first half defensive save and Sasha Marokhovsky (Upton, MA) led WPI with two shots.
The Pride outshot the Engineers 12 to four, with a 20 to four advantage in corners.
The Crimson and Gray is back in action next Saturday, October 15th, as they across town to face the Cougars of Clark in a 1pm game. Springfield hosts Plymouth State on Wednesday at 5pm.
