Second Half Outburst Propels Field Hockey Past Elms

Chicopee, MA --- WPI scored three second half goals to defeat host Elms, 3-1, in a non-conference field hockey contest at Leary Field on Saturday. The Engineers moved to 6-7 on the year and Elms slipped to 4-12 on the season.

Elms junior forward Jaclyn Soderquist (Enfield, CT) scored in the 24th minute of play for the lone Blazers tally on the day.  

In the second half, the Engineers erupted for three goals in 4:09 started off by Grace Davis' (Sandwich, MA) score at the 51:05 mark. Mary-Lee Barboza (Rochester, MA) added a goal at the 54:49 mark and Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, MA) cashed in at the 55:14 spot to give WPI a 3-1 lead. Shannon Rice (Bath, ME) assisted Mazzola's strike for the Engineers.

Elms' sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, NY) made 11 saves including nine in the second half, while junior defender Ashley Reid (Enfield, CT) added a defensive stop for the Blazers.

WPI starting goalkeeper Lauren Puishys (Oxford, MA) made two saves in the first half of action and allowed the Blazers' goal, while Liz Dufresne (Worcester, MA) picked up the win and didn't need to make a save in the second stanza.

Mazzola fired five shots on goal, while Libbi Richardson (Uxbridge, MA) notched three shots on target in the winning effort for the Engineers.

WPI heads to Mount Holyoke for a 7pm NEWMAC matchup on Tuesday. Elms returns to conference action when it hosts Daniel Webster at 4pm, also on Tuesday.
