Fitchburg, MA --- WPI freshman Kaitlyn Hess (Milford, NH) provided the game-winning goal as the Engineers defeated Fitchburg State, 2-1, in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon at Elliot Field.
The Crimson and Gray (10-5) achieved double digit wins for the first time since 2014 as the Falcons conclude the season at 9-8.
Fitchburg State took the lead at the 8:07 mark as junior forward Molly Richard (Leominster, MA) collected a feed from senior Casey Noonan (Feeding Hills, MA) off a penalty corner and lofted a shot into the upper right corner for her 11th goal on the season for the 1-0 margin.
WPI knotted the score (1-1) in the 23rd minute of play when sophomore forward Bridget Sullivan (Wilmington, MA) gathered a loose ball in front of cage and struck for her fourth tally of the year. Following the break, the Engineers grabbed the lead at the 55:12 mark as Hess blasted a shot inside the far post for her fourth marker of the 2017 campaign, resulting in the 2-1 final.
Sophomore goaltender Kasey Mammone (Leominster, MA) stopped five second half shots for the Falcons in the setback, while junior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, ME) made six saves for the Engineers in the complete game effort.
WPI finished with a 20-12 advantage in shots, while also holding a 15-7 edge in penalty corners.
The Boynton Hillers host Mount Holyoke on Saturday for an important NEWMAC contest beginning at 1pm.
