Westwood, MA --- WPI junior Shannon Hynes (Auburn, MA) was selected as a NEWMAC Field Hockey All-Conference first team selection while sophomore Abby O'Sullivan (Walpole, MA) and freshman Angie Ferro (Northboro, MA) were named to the second team, as voted upon by the league's head coaches following the regular season. Sophomore Jackie Cardin (Manchester, NH) was the program's NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship honoree.
It is the first time the Engineers have boasted a first teamer since recent Hall of Fame inductee Kelly Johnson in 2009 while the three selections are a record in the Lisa Moreau era (2007-present). It is also the fifth time in program history there have been three or more honorees including the most recent trio of Kristin Busby, Deborah Vandenburgh and Lindsay Voss in 1999.
Hynes, who earned a promotion from the 2017 second team, guided a defense that ranked second in NEWMAC contests with a 1.72 goals against average and posted four shutouts on the year. Offensively, the back notched goals at Lasell and versus Wheaton while handing out assists at Simmons, Elms, MIT, Mount Holyoke and against Wellesley.
O'Sullivan paced the NEWMAC with 1.25 goals per game overall and tied for second with 2.75 goals per conference match. The sophomore was also second in goals (20) and points (48), and third in assists (8). O'Sullivan scored multiple goals on seven occasions which included a hat-trick, and game-winning goal, at Becker. The forward netted the game-winner at Simmons and versus Wheaton as well.
Ferro concluded the season with a goal in each of the last four games featuring back-to-back overtime game-winners versus Fitchburg State and at Mount Holyoke. In all, the midfielder totaled nine goals and three assists for 21 points, and the game-winner in the regular season matchup at MIT.
