March 19, 2014 Field Hockey Team and 11 Student-Athletes Receive National Academic Honors Chandler, AZ --- The WPI Field Hockey program produced numerous academic achievements this year as determined by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA), both on an individual and team level. The WPI Field Hockey Team was recognized with a 2013 Gladiator by SGI – NFHCA Division III National Academic Team Award for teams with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. On an individual level, the Engineers placed eleven student-athletes (cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2013-2014 academic year) on the Gladiator by SGI – NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad. November 8, 2013 | 34 Fall Student-Athletes Garner NEWMAC All-Academic Recognition Boston, MA --- A total of 34 WPI student-athletes across six fall sports have garnered NEWMAC All-Academic status, as announced by the conference office. Women’s Soccer led WPI with eight nods while Men’s Cross Country led their sport with a conference-best six honorees. Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2013 spring semester, achieved second year academic status at his or her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season. >>
November 2, 2013 | Buckley Nets First Career Goal In Field Hockey's Season Finale Worcester, MA --- Libby Hart and Katie Gill each notched goals in the opening five minutes and MK Murray added two more later in the half to help Springfield defeat host WPI 4-1 in a NEWMAC field hockey contest played Saturday afternoon. Trailing 4-0, WPI drew one back midway through the second half when Allison Buckley picked up her first career goal after a long run towards goal at 55:17. WPI closes out its 2013 campaign with a 6-11 mark and 1-7 record in NEWMAC play. >>
October 30, 2013 | Field Hockey Clipped 3-2 in Regular Season Road Finale at Fitchburg State Fitchburg, MA --- Freshman forward Stephanie Stearns tallied a pair of goals as the Fitchburg State field hockey team defeated WPI, 3-2 in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field. In the first period of play WPI opened the scoring in the ninth minute of action as sophomore Sidney Rice tipped home a shot off the stick of classmate Caroline Mazzola for her second marker of the season for the 1-0 margin. >>
October 28, 2013 | WPI Athletes of the Week #9 Football's Ryan Mathie and Field Hockey's Grace Davis were named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Mathie recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including seven solo, against Merchant Marine and Davis forced overtime with a goal in the 66th minute at Wheaton. >>
October 26, 2013 | Field Hockey Falls to Wheaton as Time Expires in Overtime Norton, MA --- Wheaton freshman midfielder Darci Bruce (Walpole, MA) made “Senior Day” a memorable one for the class of 2013 on Saturday afternoon at Nordin Field against WPI as she delivered the game-winning goal with time expired in the first overtime session to lift the Lyons to a 2-1 triumph over the Engineers in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action. WPI sophomore Grace Davis forced the extra session with her second goal of the season at the 65:51 mark of the contest. >>
October 22, 2013 | Field Hockey Turned Backed by Nationally-Ranked Mount Holyoke South Hadley, MA --- First year forward Charlotte Wagner tallied a goal and two assists to propel nationally-ranked Mount Holyoke College to a 3-0 NEWMAC victory over visiting WPI on Tuesday evening. The Lyons, ranked 18th in the latest NFHCA Top 20, move to 13-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play. Liz Dufrense and Lauren Puishys each played a half for WPI. Dufrense was credited with a save in the opening stanza while Puishys made four stops and did not allow a second half goal. WPI is now 6-8 on the season and 1-5 in NEWMAC tilts. >>
October 21, 2013 | Shevchuk Garners NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week Accolades Boston, MA --- Freshman back Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) was named the NEWMAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for her efforts the week ending Sunday, October 20, 2013. Shevchuk anchored a strong defensive effort that keyed WPI’s 3-1 road win at Elms last Saturday. >>
October 19, 2013 | Second Half Outburst Propels Field Hockey Past Elms Chicopee, MA --- WPI scored three second half goals to defeat host Elms, 3-1, in a non-conference field hockey contest at Leary Field on Saturday. The Engineers moved to 6-7 on the year and Elms slipped to 4-12 on the season. Grace Davis, Mary-Lee Barboza and Caroline Mazzola each found the back of the net for the Engineers >>
October 12, 2013 | Field Hockey Defeated on the Road by Nationally-Ranked Wellesley Wellesley, MA --- The #14 Wellesley College field hockey team ran its record to 12-1, recording an 8-0 victory over visiting WPI in NEWMAC action on Saturday afternoon. The Blue improve 5-0 in NEWMAC play, while the Engineers dip to 5-7, 1-4 in the NEWMAC. For WPI, Lauren Puishys played the first 35 minutes, making four saves, while Luz Dufresne came on in the second and stopped five shots. >>
October 8, 2013 | Barboza's Markers Help Field Hockey Hand Moreau Her 100th Collegiate Victory Worcester, MA --- Junior Mary-Lee Barboza scored two goals and sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Puishy stopped four shots as WPI delivered head field hockey coach Lisa Moreau her 100th career collegiate victory in a 3-0 NEWMAC triumph over Clark on Tuesday night at Alumni Field. Moreau, currently in her seventh year at WPI, now sports a 58-55 ledger on the Engineer sideline and, along with a five-year mark of 42-36-4 at Fitchburg State, now has an overall record of 100-97-4. >>
