September 27, 2014 MIT's Second Half Surge Dooms Field Hockey Cambridge, MA --- The MIT field hockey team scored twice during the first 12 minutes of the second half and then added two more goals with less than three minutes left in regulation en route to a 4-0 victory over NEWMAC rival WPI on Saturday afternoon. Senior Elizabeth Dethy led the way for MIT with two goals and an assist as the squad improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in league action. September 16, 2014 | Field Hockey Cornered in 3-1 Setback to Worcester State Worcester, MA --- The Worcester State field hockey team capitalized on three consecutive penalty corners to hand previously unbeaten WPI a 3-1 setback in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. With the win, the Lancers evened out at 3-3 while the Engineers slipped to 5-1 on the year. The Engineers entertain Smith at 2pm on Saturday in the middle contest of a NEWMAC tripleheader at Alumni Stadium. >>
September 15, 2014 | Student-Athletes of the Week #3 Men's Soccer's Kurt Naugler and Field Hockey's Caroline Mazzola have been named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Naugler showed a flair for the dramatic as WPI remained undefeated with a pair of victories last week. The junior netted the first goal in the Engineers' 2-0 road shutout at Rhode Island College on Wednesday before potting the game-winner in double overtime at home on Saturday against Mass Maritime. Mazzola helped WPI jump out to a 5-0 start for the first time since the 2006 campaign by notching a goal in each of the Engineers victories last week. The junior proved to be the hero in Wednesday’s 2-1 double overtime victory against Fitchburg State when she registered her second career game-winning marker. >>
September 13, 2014 | Misera's Magic Push Field Hockey's Opening Streak to Five Worcester, MA --- Junior Amy Misera scored a pair of goals in a span of 1:19 midway through the first half to help WPI remain undefeated courtesy of a 4-0 win over Elms in a Saturday afternoon non-conference matchup at Alumni Stadium. The Engineers 5-0 record is the best start since the opening of the 2006 campaign. Misera knocked home a feed from senior Nicole Holmes at 15:12 and followed it up with an unassisted marker at 16:31. Junior Caroline Mazzola made it 3-0 when she scored on a one-timer from senior Mary-Lee Barboza at 36:03. >>
September 9, 2014 | Mazzola Notches Game-Winner to Push Field Hockey Past Fitchburg State Fitchburg, MA --- Junior forward Caroline Mazzola tallied the game-winning score 5:35 into the second overtime to propel WPI over Fitchburg State, 2-1 in double overtime in non-conference field hockey action at Elliot Field this evening. September 6, 2014 | Mazzucco Delivers Game-Winner as Field Hockey Works OT at Simmons Boston, MA --- Sophomore forward Jena Mazzucco scored with 10 seconds left into overtime to give the Worcester Polytechnic Institute field hockey team a 1-0 victory over host Simmons College Saturday on Winsor Field. The Engineers improve to a perfect 3-0, while the Sharks fall to 1-3 on the season. WPI owned a 16-6 shot advantage, including all seven in overtime, and controlled the penalty corners by a count of 12-2. >>
September 2, 2014 | Mazzucco and Holmes Notch First Half Goals as Field Hockey Stays Undefeated Worcester, MA --- Jena Mazzucco’s goal in the 22nd minute proved to be the difference as WPI defeated visiting Bridgewater State 2-0 on Tuesday night in a non-conference field hockey matchup at Alumni Stadium. The first half ended when Nicole Holmes knocked home a rebound following a penalty corner with time expired. The Engineers improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2011 season, which was also the last time WPI topped the Bears (1-1). >>
September 1, 2014 | Student-Athletes of the Week #1 Men's Soccer's Sam Russell and Field Hockey's Grace Davis have been named WPI Student-Athletes of the Week. Russell netted the game-winning tally in the Engineers’ 2-0 victory Friday night over Worcester State and add a goal in Sunday’s road shutout of Becker. The senior had entered the weekend with just one career marker before doubling it against the Crimson and Gray’s city foes. Davis, meanwhile, assisted on the Engineers first goal off a penalty corner early in second half before lofting the ball high in the air over the goalies head and into the back of the net to tie the contest. The junior and her teammates kept the pressure on, and aided by the game-winning goal with just under two minutes left, WPI left Lasell with the victory. >>
August 30, 2014 | Field Hockey Sprints Back Behind Davis and Buckley to Defeat Lasell 3-2 Newton, MA --- Grace Davis registered a goal and an assist and Allie Buckley notched the game-winner with just under two minutes left in regulation as the WPI field hockey kicked off the 2014 campaign with a dramatic 3-2 road victory at Lasell. Down 2-0, the Engineers struck back in the 50th minute, opening their scoring with a shot from Caroline Mazzola on a Davis feed to cut the Lasell lead to 2-1 then the visitors tied the game in the 57th minute when Davis converted on a pass from Jena Mazzuco following a penalty corner. >>
August 15, 2014 | WPI Field Hockey to Hold Field Hockey Clinic on September 7th The WPI field hockey team will be offering a skills clinic on Sunday, September 7th from noon to 2 on its new Rooftop field. This clinic is available to middle and high school students, and the cost is only $10. Come and gain valuable experience playing on turf. WPI was the site of the MIAA Field Hockey championship games in 2013. >>
July 1, 2014 | 2014 Schedules to be Announced Beginning on Tuesday, July 1st Worcester, MA --- The WPI Athletic Department will reveal the 2014 fall schedules over three days beginning on Tuesday, July 1st. Followers of @WPIAthletics on Twitter will be the first to know when each schedule is released. As a teaser, the competition kicks off on Friday, August 29th with three teams in action. Volleyball begins play in the two-day Regis Tournament against Becker (6pm) and the host Pride (8pm) while Women's Soccer squares off with Southern Maine at 6pm in the Gordon Tournament and Men's Soccer meets Worcester State in the City Tournament at 8pm at Clark. >>
