April 11, 2012 Field Hockey's Antonellis Named a ‘New Face of Engineering' Danielle Antonellis, a senior field hockey captain at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), was recognized as one of the 15 most promising college engineering students in the United States – and the world – by the National Engineers Week Foundation and its partner, the American Society of Civil Engineers, through its first annual New Faces of Engineering – College Edition. The winners were recognized for academic excellence, leadership within student organizations, outstanding communication skills, non-engineering related community service and involvement in the engineering industry. November 8, 2011 | Defensive Duo of Comeau and Sharpe Earn All-NEWMAC Field Hockey Accolades Babson Park, MA --- WPI field hockey backs Katelyn Comeau and Becca Sharpe were recognized Tuesday as All-NEWMAC performers after voting of the league’s coaches. The pair each took home second team honors from the nine-team conference. Comeau and Sharpe each played in and started all 18 contests in 2001 for the Engineers. Both players backboned a defensive effort that saw the Crimson and Gray shave 22 goals allowed of their total from a season ago. >>
November 2, 2011 | Field Hockey Edged 2-1 by Springfield in NEWMAC Quarterfinal Springfield, MA --- Kelly Gallo scored two first half goals to power the fourth-seeded Springfield College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded WPI in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Quarterfinal action Wednesday night at Stagg Field. With the win, Springfield moves to 5-13 overall and advances to take on top-seeded MIT on Saturday morning at 11:00 am. WPI ends its season with an11-7 record with the loss. >>
October 31, 2011 | Cook's Two Goals Helps Field Hockey Earn 4-2 Marathon Monday Victory At Smith Northampton, MA --- In a game that began Saturday and featured heavy snow and ended Monday in mostly clear and cold conditions, junior Chelsea Cook (Sayville, NY) tallied her first two career goals to help the WPI field hockey team clinch a spot in this week’s NEWMAC Tournament with a 4-2 road win at Smith. WPI improves to 11-6, with a 4-4 NEWMAC record. The tournament berth is the first for the Engineers since 2009. >>
October 30, 2011 | Field Hockey's Suspended Game at Smith Shifted to Monday at 5pm Northampton, MA --- The resumption of WPI Field Hockey's suspended game at Smith has been postponed from 3pm Sunday to 5pm Monday. The contest will contiue on Smith's turf field. The two teams began play on Saturday but the historic October snowstorm forced the game to be suspended with 8:31 remaining in the contest with WPI holding a 4-1 advantage. >>
October 26, 2011 | Read, Pearce and Dufresne Power Field Hockey to 2-0 Shutout of Simmons Worcester, MA --- Senior Emily Pearce scored in the final home game of her career, helping to lift WPI to a 2-0 victory over Simmons on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field. With the win, WPI is now 10-6 while the Sharks fall to 9-10. WPI’s Megan Read got the Engineers up on the board early when she recovered her own shot and blasted it past the Simmons goalkeeper just over eight minutes into the game, putting the Crimson and Gray up 1-0. It was Read’s second goal of the season. >>
October 24, 2011 | WPI Weekly Athletics Update #8 Field Hockey's Libbi Richardson and Men's Soccer's Eric Crevoiserat have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Richardson's overtime goal stunned Wellesley in a key NEWMAC matchup with postseason implications. Crevoiserat had a hand in two of three goals as the Engineers blanked regionally-ranked Springfield. >>
October 22, 2011 | Richardson's Dramatics Helps Field Hockey Defeat Wellesley in Overtime Worcester, MA --- Libbi Richardson poked home a goal following a wild scramble 7:25 into overtime to lift WPI to a dramatic 2-1 victory over visiting Wellesley on Saturday morning. The victory helps bolster WPI’s playoff push. The Engineers are now 9-6 overall and 3-4 in NEWMAC play. WPI is currently tied for the sixth and final NEWMAC Tournament berth with Wheaton, a half game up on Clark (2-4). The Lyons and Cougars meet Sunday in a key makeup contest. >>
October 18, 2011 | Antonellis Connects in Field Hockey's 4-1 Loss to Mount Holyoke Worcester, MA --- Mount Holyoke’s Kirstin Kilburn and Shara Robertson connected on a pair of second half goals to propel the Lyons to a 4-1 win versus host WPI in an important NEWMAC field hockey contest played on Tuesday evening. PI climbed backed into the game with a perfectly executed penalty corner after time had expired in the first half. Danielle Antonellis drilled a laser into the top left corner following an insertion by Megan Read and a stick stop by Celena Dopart. >>
October 15, 2011 | Late Goal Dooms Field Hockey in 1-0 Loss to City Rival Clark Worcester, MA --- Host Clark University got the game-winning goal from senior Erin Murphy with 1:14 remaining in regulation to lift the Cougars past crosstown rival WPI, 1-0, in NEWMAC field hockey action on Saturday afternoon. With the win Clark improves to 8-3 overall, but more importantly, the Cougars move to 2-2 in league play. The Engineers, meanwhile, now stand at 8-5 overall and 2-3 in conference action. Goalkeeper Liz Dufresne was outstanding in the cage for the Engineers, turning back nine shots. >>
