Box ScoreWorcester, MA --- Five different WPI players scored in double figures as the host Engineers registered a season-high in points in a 89-67 victory over UMass-Boston in non-conference men's basketball action on Thursday evening. The match-up featured two teams that participated in the 2006 NCAA Division III Championships.
WPI (18-2, #20 D3Hoops.com) began the game by connecting on 12 of its first 17 shots from the field. Jim Marois (Worcester, MA) would provide the Engineers a lead they would not relinquish when he opened the contest by rattling off five points in the first 30 seconds. WPI led 47-33 at the half and would not see the Beacons cut the advantage to single digits the rest of the way.
Marois paced the Crimson and Gray's offensive attack with 17 points while Antoine Coleman (Everett, MA) and Ryan Cain (Webster, MA) chipped in with 16 and 15 respectively. WPI received a spark from its bench as Ryan Bourque (Nashua, NH) contributed 14 points and R.C. Grady (Shirley, MA) added 11. Coleman and Bourque shared game-high honors with nine rebounds each as the Engineers enjoyed a 46-37 advantage on the glass.
Junior Amigo Paniagua (Santiago, DR) led all scorers with 23 points on the night for UMass-Boston (8-13). A.J. Titus (Roxbury, MA) registered nine points while Aaron Jones (Boston, MA) and Mark Doran (South Boston, MA) both tailed seven. Little East Conference leading scoring Tony Barros (Dorchester, MA) was in foul trouble throughout the night and was held to six points but swiped a game-best five steals.
Both teams return to conference action on Saturday. WPI hosts MIT at 2pm in a NEWMAC contest while UMass-Boston ventures to Plymouth State for a 3pm Little East affair.
