Robinson Sparks Men's Basketball to 84-52 Win Over UMass Boston

WPI 84, UMass Boston 52
Worcester, MA --- Jeffrey Robinson (Granby, CT)
scored 18 points off the bench to lead nationally ranked WPI to a
84-52 win over visiting UMass Boston in non-conference men's
basketball action Tuesday night at Harrington Auditorium. The
Engineers, who defeated the Beacons for the fifth straight year,
improve to 8-1 while UMass Boston slips to 2-5.
WPI, ranked 19th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, used a
smothering defense to hold UMass Boston to only 18 points in the
first half on 7-for-23 shooting (30.4%), as the Engineers took a
commanding 30 point lead into the break. WPI was dominant inside,
posting a 54-20 advantage in the paint and out-rebounding the
Beacons by a 40-27 margin. The contest was even at 6-6 four minutes
into the game before the Crimson and Gray went on a 28-2 run and
never had their lead shrink below 20 the rest of the way.
Robinson's 18 points in 19 minutes spearheaded an extremely
efficient WPI attack. The Boynton Hillers received contributions
from the entire roster, as nine Engineers registered double-digit
minutes and 14 different players dented the scoring column. The
Engineers’ bench dropped in 32 points in the first-half
alone. Jerome Stewart (Bloomfield, CT) added eight
points and five rebounds for WPI, while Jerome
Kirkland (Boston, MA), Ben Etten (Hollis,
NH) and Fernando Perez (Lowell, MA) chipped in
with seven apiece.
The Engineers also had their transition offense in full swing,
outscoring the Beacons 20-4 on the fast break. WPI scored 25 points
off 23 Beacon turnovers, and shot an impressive 52.9% from the
floor.
UMass Boston was led by Roy Brown Jr. (Mattapan,
MA) who scored 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting (75%) in a losing
effort. Aaron Jones (Boston, MA) added nine for
the Beacons.
WPI concludes a brief two-game homestand on Sunday when they take
on No. 16 Elms in a battle of nationally ranked teams. Tip-off is
scheduled for 1pm. UMass Boston returns to the hardwood on Thursday
at 7pm when they entertain regional power Salem State.
