Carr Named Second Team Capital One/Co-SIDA Academic All American
Worcester, MA --- WPI men's basketball student-athlete Matt Carr (Somersworth, NH) has been selected to the Capital One Academic All-America second team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Carr joins James Naughton (1996) and Mike Shannon (1997) as the only men's basketball players to earn All-America status in the history of the program.
Carr leads the Engineers in rebounds, field goal percentage and blocks and is currently second on the team in scoring (12.4 ppg) and steals (36). The center's 58.9 percent from the field is second in the NEWMAC while he is third in blocks (46) and fifth in rebounding (7.1 rpg). Carr has amassed six double-doubles this season and was twice named the NEWMAC Player of the Week.
In the classroom, the junior sports a 3.96 GPA and is majoring in chemical engineering. Carr's IQP Project created content for an online math tutoring system. He is a two-time member of the NEWMAC All-Academic team.
Carr, who hails from Somersworth, NH, is the son of Michael and Deborah. He played scholastically for Dan Parr at St. Thomas Aquinas.
It marks the just 37th time in the history of the Co-SIDA program that a WPI student-athlete has been tabbed an Academic All-America and Carr becomes just the 26th to be honored. He is the first player to earn the award during the tenure of 10th year head coach Chris Bartley.
Carr and his Engineer teammates are currently 21-4 and post an 11-1 mark in NEWMAC play en route to capturing their seventh regular season title in the past eight years. WPI will open NEWMAC Tournament play at home on Saturday, hosting either Babson or Coast Guard at 1pm at Harrington Auditorium.
