  • WPI Basketball and Football Mourn the Passing of William M. “Bill” Gibbons

    The WPI basketball and football teams, as well as the entire athletic department, mourn the loss of venerable PA announcer William M. “Bill” Gibbons who passed away June 5 following a recent bout with cancer. The longtime educator and coach was an icon in the Central Mass. basketball and tennis communities.
  • WPI Men Second, Women Third in NEWMAC President Cup Standings

    Westwood, MA --- For the third consecutive year WPI finished second in the Men’s NEWMAC Presidents Cup standings while the women placed third, as announced at the conference's annual meetings by WPI President Laurie Leshin along with NEWMAC President and WPI Director of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics Dana L. Harmon.

    WORCESTER – The WPI athletic department recently honored all of its 20 varsity teams which encompasses over 600 student-athletes at its annual awards banquet. During the festivities, 11 student-athletes were presented with major awards. These accolades highlight some of the best varsity student-athletes at WPI who excel both in the classroom and in their respective sports.

  • Biney, Beck and Rodgers Net All-WACBA Honors

    WORCESTER – Women’s Basketball seniors Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and Madison Beck (Syracuse, NY), as well as Men’s Basketball senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA) have garnered postseason honors from the Worcester Area College Basketball Association, as announced Wednesday in the Telegram & Gazette. Voters included sports information directors or primary contacts from each of the nine NCAA schools in Worcester County, including Division I Holy Cross and Division II Assumption, as well as members of the local media. Biney repeated as a first team selection while Beck and Rodgers landed on their respective second teams.

    Westwood, MA --- WPI senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA) has been named to the NEWMAC All-Conference first team following a vote by the head coaches at the conclusion of the regular season. He was also selected as the Engineers representative on the NEWMAC All-Sportsmanship team. The same feat was accomplished last year by Ian Converse.

    Springfield, MA --- Tournament Most Outstanding Player, junior AJ Jurko (Weston, FL) and WPI freshman Reid Walker (Lithia, FL) shared game-high honors with 16 points apiece as third-seeded, and No. 25, MIT edged fourth-seeded WPI, 63-57, Sunday afternoon in the 2018 NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Championship game played in Springfield’s in Blake Arena.

    Springfield, MA --- Reid Walker (Lithia, FL) tied his career-high with 23 points, including the final free throw, and Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA) forced overtime with a late layup as fourth-seeded WPI knocked off top-seeded Springfield, 84-80, in the NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Championship semifinals held in Blake Arena. Kahleb Downing (Middleton, CT) canned a key 3-pointer and a jumper in the extra session.
  • Career Nights Carry Men’s Basketball to 15th Consecutive NEWMAC Semifinal

    WORCESTER – Sophomore Jake Wisniewski (West Brookfield, MA) was a rebound shy of a double-double in the first half and went on to tie his career-bests of 17 points and 10 rebounds without a turnover and senior Aaron Todd (York, ME) shared game-high honors with a career-best 21 points as fourth-seeded WPI advanced to its 15th consecutive NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Championship semifinal with a 95-76 victory over fifth-seeded Wheaton Wednesday night in Harrington Auditorium.
  • Rodgers Shines as Men’s Basketball Concludes Regular Season at MIT

    Cambridge, MA --- Led by a combined 47 points from junior captains AJ Jurko (Weston, FL) and Cameron Korb (Los Gatos, CA), the MIT men’s basketball team closed out the regular season with a 71-59 home win over WPI on Saturday afternoon in Rockwell Cage.

  • NEWMAC Recognizes 31 Winter Student-Athletes for Work in the Classroom

    Westwood, MA --- Eleven WPI winter student-athletes garnered NEWMAC Academic All-Conference status for the third time as 20 more were also recognized for carrying a 3.5 GPA or better. Men’s Swimming & Diving totaled 13 selections, followed by Women’s Swimming & Diving with 12. Women’s Basketball featured four selections and Men’s Basketball netted a pair.

    Babson Park, MA --- Freshman Andrew Jaworski (Tolland, CT) scored a game-best 16 points while he was joined in double figures by the rest of the Babson starters as the Beavers held off WPI, 68-59, Wednesday night in a NEWMAC Men’s basketball contest that was played in Staake Gymnasium.
