March 17, 2014 Men's Basketball's Longwell Tabbed to the D3hoops All-Northeast Second Team Minneapolis, MN --- WPI’s Sam Longwell has been named to the second team All-Northeast region for men’s basketball by D3hoops.com. It marks the fifth straight season and the 10th time in the last 11 years that an Engineer player has received all-region accolades from the website. March 3, 2014 | Men's Basketball Earns NCAA Tournament Bid Worcester, MA --- For the eighth time in the last 10 years, the WPI men’s basketball program will be participating in the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Engineers snagged a coveted Pool C bid into the 62-team tournament and begin play Friday at 5:30pm in the first round against Albertus Magnus at Purchase, NY. Tickets on Friday night are $10 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens and all students with ID. >>
March 3, 2014 | Men's Basketball to Learn NCAA Fate Monday Afternoon at 12:30pm Worcester, MA --- The WPI men’s basketball will find out early this afternoon if it has earned an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships. The selection show, which can be found at ncaa.com, is slated to being at 12:30pm. The Engineers are 22-4 on the season and captured the NEWMAC regular season title for the ninth time in 11 years this winter. The Crimson and Gray were sent to the at-large pool after they were defeated Saturday by eventual champion MIT in the tournament semifinals. WPI is looking to participate in the NCAAs for the eighth time in the last 10 years. >>
March 1, 2014 | Men's Basketball Upset by MIT in NEWMAC Tournament Semifinals Worcester, MA --- Fourth-seeded MIT broke open a halftime tie by scoring 25 of the second half’s first 30 points en route to a 64-46 victory over top-seed and host WPI in a NEWMAC men’s basketball tournament semifinal contest played Saturday afternoon in Harrington Auditorium.With the victory, MIT improves to 19-8 on the season and advances to Sunday’s championship game back at WPI on Sunday at 1pm against the winner of the day’s second game between second-seeded Babson and third-seeded Springfield. WPI, No. 12 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 and fifth in the latest NCAA Division III NCAA Northeast rankings, is now 22-4 and awaits word on a possible NCAA Tournament bid on Monday. >>
March 1, 2014 | Springfield Comes Back to Defeat Babson in NEWMAC Men's BB Semifinal Worcester, MA --- Nick McKenna drilled a pair of 3-pointers in overtime to help propel third-seeded Springfield to a come-from-behind victory over second-seeded Babson, 85-77, in a NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal played Saturday at WPI’s Harrington Auditorium. With the triumph, Springfield (20-6) reaches the NEWMAC championship game for the third straight year. The Pride will meet fourth-seeded MIT, a 64-46 winner over top seed and host WPI, Sunday at 1pm back in Harrington Auditorium. >>
February 28, 2014 | WPI and Smith to Host NEWMAC Basketball Championships this Weekend Boston, MA --- A pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) champions will be crowned this weekend. The semifinals of the men's and women's basketball tournaments will be played on Saturday, March 1, while the title games are scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. WPI and Smith are slated to host the men's and women's championship, respectively. The NEWMAC tournament champions will receive an automatic bid into the upcoming NCAA Division III basketball tournaments. NCAA tournament fields will be announced next Monday, March 3 on ncaa.com. >>
February 26, 2014 | TELEGRAM FEATURE: Former St. John's Stars Play Key Roles for WPI WPI teammates and former St. John's High stars Chad LaBove and Matt Harringtonhave embraced their supporting roles this season. "If you're a St. John's fan and you read the box scores you're going to be like, 'Oh, these guys aren't doing much,'" WPI coach Chris Bartley said before Tuesday's practice, "but if you're coaching the team or you're playing with these guys, you know these guys do so much." >>
February 24, 2014 | Domenick Mastascusa of Men's Basketball Draws WACBA Honors Worcester, MA --- WPI junior forward Domenick Mastascusa has been named Co-Worcester Area College Basketball Association (WACBA) Men's Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, February 23rd. Mastascusa shares the award with David Dudzinski of Division I Holy Cross. Mastascusa posted a pair of double-doubles as he led the No.12 ranked Engineers to a pair of victories and the outright NEWMAC regular season championship. The junior tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds in WPI’s 58-46 home victory over Wheaton before erupting for 16 points and 10 boards in the Crimson and Gray’s 65-60 WACBA win over city rival Clark. >>
February 24, 2014 | 17 Winter Student-Athletes Pocket NEWMAC All-Academic Recognition Boston, MA --- 17 WPI student-athletes from four winter sports have earned NEWMAC All-Academic honors, as announced by the conference office. Women’s Swimming and Diving led WPI with eight awardees while Men’s Swimming and Diving picked up five. Honorees must have met the following criteria: earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5/4.0 scale or 4.35/5.0 scale after the 2013 fall semester, achieved second year academic status at his or her institution, and been a member of the varsity team for the entire season. >>
February 22, 2014 | Outright Madness: Men's Basketball Topples Clark, Earns NEWMAC Crown Worcester, MA --- The WPI men’s basketball team faced a stiff test in its regular season finale as Worcester rival Clark wouldn’t relent, taking the lead twice in the second half and keeping it a single-possession game into the final minute before Domenick Mastascusa put it away out of a timeout with 53 seconds left as WPI held on for a 65-60 victory on Senior Night at Clark’s Kneller Center. Mastascusa racked up a double-double, tallying 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, while Sam Longwell joined in with 22 points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals. >>
February 19, 2014 | Harrington's Hot Hand Hands Men's Basketball Share Of NEWMAC Crown Worcester, MA --- The WPI men’s basketball team celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday and did right by its graduating players Ryan Kolb, Chad LaBove and Drew Osei as the host Engineers pulled away in the second half, pocketing a 58-46 win over Wheaton to clinch at least a share of the NEWMAC regular season title with one game remaining. Junior Sam Longwell did the heavy lifting early with all 13 of his points in the first half, while Domenick Mastascusa added 12, and Matt Harrington matched his career-high with 11 points. >>
