March 26, 2012 Coppola Picked by the ECAC as New England's Top Men's Basketball Rookie Centerville, MA --- WPI freshman guard Marco Coppola has been named ECAC Division III New England Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Year based on a recent vote of regional coaches. Coppola, along with Player of the Year DaQuan Brooks of Western Connecticut, highlight the announcement of the conference’s all-star team. March 5, 2012 | WPI Weekly Athletics Update #23 Softball's Christa Coscia and Men's Basketball's Jaime Shannon have been named WPI Athletes of the Week. Coscia struck out a career-high 11 batters en route to a two-hit, 5-0, shutout against Newbury to open the 2012 campaign on Sunday. Shannon poured in 14 of his 21 points on Sunday in the second half to help lead the Engineers to an 87-66 victory over Salve Regina in the ECAC D-III New England Men's Basketball Championship game. The senior picked up the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award for his effort. >>
March 3, 2012 | Shannon and Kolb Propel Men's Basketball to ECAC Semifinal Triumph Worcester, MA --- Senior Jaime Shannon poured in a game-best 17 points to help lead top-seed and host WPI to a 75-50 triumph over fourth-seeded Bridgewater State in the semifinals of the ECAC Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament this afternoon. The Engineers, who are making their first ECAC tournament appearance since the 2004 season, improve to 19-7 overall and move to the title game match-up tomorrow at 12 against second-seeded Salve Regina. The Seahawks defeated third-seeded Elms, 70-59, earlier today. >>
March 3, 2012 | Birrell Shines as Salve Regina Defeats Elms in ECAC Men's Basketball Semifinal Worcester, MA --- Ryan Birrell exploded for 18 second-half points and recorded a near triple-double to power Salve Regina to the ECAC New England Championship Finals on Saturday at the Harrington Auditorium, defeating Elms, 70-59. Salve Regina ups their record to 21-9 while Elms wraps up its season with an 18-11 mark. In the second semifinal of the afternoon, host WPI will play Bridgewater State. The winner of that contest will face Salve Regina on Sunday, March 4th at 12:00pm for the ECAC New England Championship. >>
March 1, 2012 | Carr, Melillo and Wesoloski Repeat as NEWMAC All-Academic Team Members Babson Park, MA --- Three WPI Men’s Basketball student-athletes were named to the 2011-12 NEWMAC All-Academic team on Thursday, as senior Matt Carr made the team for the third consecutive season. WPI finished second in the NEWMAC with Clark, who also had three honorees. Juniors Craig Melillo and Joe Wesoloski were both second-time selections. >>
February 29, 2012 | Three from Men's Basketball Honored by the NEWMAC Babson Park, MA --- A trio of WPI Men’s Basketball players have been named All-Conference players by the NEWMAC on Wednesday. Senior Matt Carr was selected to the first team for the second straight year while Marco Coppola was tabbed the conference’s Rookie of the Year and was joined by senior Jaime Shannon. It marks just the third time in the 14-year history of the NEWMAC that the Engineers have had three players honored by the league and Coppola joins Ryan Cain (2004) as the only Crimson and Gray player to take home Rookie of the Year honors. >>
February 28, 2012 | Men's Basketball's Carr Selected as a Jostens Trophy Finalist Salem, VA --- WPI senior men's basketball player Matt Carr was named a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. today. The club is responsible for the initial review of annual nominations and narrowed the pool to 10 men and 10 women finalists. The Jostens Trophy is a national award created by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va., to honor the most oustanding men's and women's Division III basketball players of the year. The award takes into account three vital parts: basketball ability, academic prowess and community service. >>
February 27, 2012 | Men's Basketball Named Top Seed for ECAC Championships Centerville, MA --- The WPI Men’s Basketball program was selected as the top seed for the 2012 ECAC New England Division III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Engineers, who are in the Tournament for the first time since 2004, received a first round bye in the seven-team tournament and will host the semifinals and championship games on Saturday and Sunday in Harrington Auditorium. WPI currently sports a 18-7 record and has participated in postseason competition in eight of the last nine seasons. >>
February 25, 2012 | Springfield Knocks Off Men's Basketball In Hard-Fought NEWMAC Semifinal Cambridge, MA --- Junior Alex Berthiaume poured in a game-high 22 points to help propel third-seeded Springfield to a 66-60 win over WPI in the second of two NEWMAC semifinals at MIT’s Rockwell Cage on Saturday afternoon. WPI (18-7), ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division III Northeast regional rankings, hopes for a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA Championships. Selections will be announced on Monday at noon. >>
February 21, 2012 | Carr Selected to Capital One Men's Basketball Academic All-America First Team Worcester, MA --- WPI men's basketball student-athlete Matt Carr has been named a Capital One Division III Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA). Carr garnered first team honors this winter as a senior after being selected to the second team a season ago. He is the 11th WPI athlete to be a multiple-time winner and just the 12th - joining James Naughton (1996) as the only men’s basketball player - to be distinguished as a first-teamer. >>
February 18, 2012 | Seniors Shine as Men's Basketball Repels Clark in Regular Season Finale Worcester, MA ---The senior trio of Matt Carr, David Brown and Jaime Shannon led WPI past visiting Clark, 75-54, in a NEWMAC men’s basketball contest on Saturday afternoon at Harrington Auditorium. The Engineers wrap up their regular season with an 18-6 record and an 8-4 mark in the NEWMAC standings. WPI, who is ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division III Northeast, had already locked the second seed in next week’s NEWMAC Tournament and will play third-seeded Springfield in a semifinal on Saturday at 3pm at MIT. >>
