Men's Crew Has Strong Opening Day on Lake Quinsingamond

Worcester, MA --- Men's Crew opened up its 2008 spring season on Worcester's Lake Quinsigamond Saturday morning competing for the Class of 2003 Cup versus UMass, Wesleyan and Colby.

The Engineers had a productive day on the water, with the varsity four of Greg Hesler (Glastonbury, CT), Josh Wimble (Albans, CT) , Jack Sternal (Westfield, NJ), Walter Woodington (Natick, MA) and coxswain Eileen Gribouski (Sutton, MA) taking a top place finish.  The four combined for a time of 7:30.94 over the 2000 meter course.

The varsity eight of Connor McGrath (Troy, NY), Scott Gary (Lubbock, TX), Neil Lettenberger (Oakland, ME), Henry Moore (Jaffrey, NH), Arthur Gager (Kennebunk, ME), Sebastien Cohn (Orinda, CA), Tobin McGee (Rye, NY), Andrew Sandefer (New Orleans, LA) and cox Bethany Bouchard (Nashua, NH) took second place (6:06.61) for the Crimson and Gray finishing behind highly touted Wesleyan.

Both the second and third varsity eights were able to row to second place finishes, rounding out the day for WPI.  The second eight comprised of Drew Oprea (Hicksville, NY), Berk Birand (Istanbul, Turkey), Jeffrey Onderdonk (Colechester, CT), Nick Vitello (Tolland, CT), Ben Johnson (Northford, CT), Max French (Harwinton, CT), Burak Derkunt (Istanbul, Turkey), Evan May (Marshfield, MA) and Brenna Colleary (Southboro, MA) recorded a time of 6:28.23 while the third eight of Garret Cavanaugh (Townsend, MA), Philip Kellermeier (Berlin, Germany), Don Havener (Turner, ME), Matt Kielbasa (Ludlow, MA), Elan Pelletier (Georgetown, MA), Andrew Emerson (York, ME), Drew Domnarski (Pawcatuck, CT), Tom Parenteau (Scarborough, ME) and Nina Bass (Trumbull, CT) finished in 6:47.42. 

Men's Crew will be back on the water next Saturday when they compete against MIT, Williams and Connecticut College for the Donahue Cup.
