Men’s Rowing Varsity Eight Earns Bronze, Noble Named NIRC Coach of the Year

WORCESTER -- WPI Men's Rowing Varsity Eight and Third Varsity Eight claimed bronze at the National Invitational Rowing Championships Friday on Lake Quinsigamond. At the conclusion of the event, head coach Larry Noble was named the NIRC Coach of the Year.

As a team the Crimson and Gray amassed 53 points to place fourth overall out of 18 competing schools.

The reigning New England Champion V8 posted a 6:06.425 in the grand final to finish behind Hobart (5:59.059) and Bates (6:01.363). It was also a better time than Williams (6:07.479), Marist, who beat WPI in the morning trial, and Tufts. The Red Foxes were .324 quicker than the Crimson and Gray earlier in the competition.

The Third Varsity Eight made their first race in two weeks count with a 6:13.101 in the grand final. The Second Varsity Eight jumped out to a huge lead in the petite final and won it with a time of 6:15.225 to place seventh overall. UMass was the first boat behind the Engineers with a 6:18.370 followed by Ithaca, RIT, Trinity and Williams. Their morning time of 6:08.506 was third to Bates and Marist.

The Novice Four was called up to compete in the Open Four where it placed fourth in a time of 7:10.695. BC, Skidmore and UNH were 1-2-3 as Hamilton and Buckell were fifth and sixth. The Eagles also topped the Engineers (7:13.249) in the morning session.

After a trip this summer to the famed Henley Royal Regatta in England, the Engineers will begin the 2017-2018 fall season at the Textile River Regatta on Sunday, October 1st.
