WPI Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener Versus Worcester State

WPI 2, Worcester State 1

Box Score

Babson Park, MA --- Junior David Zuniga (Cromwell, CT) netted the game-winning goal in the 63rd minute to lift WPI to a 2-1 victory over Worcester State College in game two of the 2006 Babson Invitational Men's Soccer Tournament on Friday afternoon. It was the first contest of the season for both teams.

Worcester State got on the board first when sophomore Matt Brothers (Auburn, Mass.) scored on a penalty kick at 28:44. However, WPI answered just over two minutes later, as Zuniga ripped a cross that sophomore Benjamin Gilde (Manchester, NH) deflected perfectly into the upper right corner, knotting the contest at 1-1.

Things stayed that way until the 63rd minute, when first-year Tyler Carroll (Andover, MA) crossed the ball to an open Zuniga on the left side of the box. The junior midfielder then chipped a shot off the outstretched hands of Worcester State goalie Albert Jenkins (Thomaston, GA) and into the net for the eventual game-winner.

Worcester State turned up the offensive pressure in the final 15 minutes, but the WPI defense held the Lancers at bay. Brothers managed a shot on net from 30 yards out with 30 seconds remaining in the game, but Engineers' goalie Brian Catalano (Whitinsville, MA) scooped it up just inside the right post to clinch the victory. Catalano finished with two saves in the win, while Jenkins made six stops for Worcester State, including two fantastic diving saves in the first half.
