WPI Posts Shutout Over WNEC at Babson Invitational

Babson Park, MA --- The WPI men's soccer team improved to
2-0 on the season with a 2-0 shutout of New England College in the
final game of the 2006 Babson Invitational Tournament on Saturday
afternoon. With the win, the Engineers finished second in the
tourney behind host Babson, which took first place based on goal
differential.
WPI took a 1-0 lead at the 17-minute mark, as junior David
Zuniga (Cromwell, CT) collected a cross from sophomore
Benjamin Gilde (Manchester, NH) and tucked a shot
into lower right corner for his second goal of the tournament.
Gilde then netted his second of the tourney at 67:47 when he scored
on a penalty kick, giving the Engineers a 2-0 advantage.
Despite suffering the loss, junior goalie Nick
Kroplein (Jeffersonville, VT) was outstanding in
net for NEC, finishing with 12 saves, including one on a penalty
kick in the 44th minute. Senior goalie Brian
Catalano (Whitinsville, MA) made all three of his saves in
the first half for WPI.
With the 2-0 victory and yesterday's 2-1 win over Worcester State,
WPI finished the tournament with a goal differential of +3 to take
second place. Babson (2-0-0) took first with a goal differential of
+10, NEC (0-2-0) finished third at -6, and Worcester State came in
fourth at -7.
