WPI Men's Soccer Wins First NEWMAC Contest over Wheaton

Worcester, MA -- Brandon Finzel (Northport, NY) scored the only
goal of the match in the 35th minute and Brian Catalano
(Whitinsville, MA) notched his third shutout of the season as host
WPI remained undefeated with a 1-0 victory over nationally-ranked
Wheaton College Saturday afternoon. The Engineers improve to 5-0
(1-0 NEWMAC) on the season while the Lyons, ranked 19th in the
latest D3Kicks.com Top 25, fall to 4-2 (0-1 NEWMAC)
Finzel's goal came when he received a pass from Chris Lyons
(Jefferson, MA) and knocked a shot to the left post past the
out-stretched hands of the Lyons goalkeeper. The goal came minutes
after Finzel hit the crossbar twice on a shot and subsequent
rebound.
Catalano recorded a season-high six saves in the midday tilt,
including a rocket off the foot of Reed Hollett (Bedford, Nova
Scotia) in the 54th minute. Wheaton keeper Matt Pachniuk (Newton,
CT) collected four saves in a strong effort between the pipes for
the Lyons.
The win marked the first for the Crimson and Gray versus Wheaton
since a 4-0 victory in October 2002. The streak of five matches
included three regular season match-ups and two playoff
contests.
WPI returns to action on Tuesday with a 7pm home match against
Gordon. Wheaton next heads to Williams for a matinee contest on
Sunday at 1pm.
